When umpires call runners out on plays like this?

Why did he even get into that position anyway? Why wasn't he behind Helton? That's awful.

I cannot remember seeing a worse call at a base.

With all acknowledgement to how obviously wrong the above call was, Jim Joyce ruining Armando Galarraga'a perfect game was the worst call at a base.

Hopefully baseball will remain (mostly) instant replay free.

The greatest thing about the greatest sport is that it is the personification of human nature, governed by humans. Failures and all, I would much rather keep it that way.

Although that call was wrong as well, it was alot closer of a call then this.

Runner beat the throw, and he's freaking 3 feet off the bag!

I don't see what's great about the wrong call being made.

The human element that i want to see is the players on the field. There is NO reason to consistently have blown calls made when they can be rectified. The goal as an umpire to is to get the call right, and that should be the goal of MLB. Reviewing that play would have taken 5 seconds and would have saved about 2 minutes of Don Mattingly having to go out there and argue.

I went back and watched Joyce's call on Galarraga. Very bad call and it made me sick to my stomach. This was still a worse call, without a doubt.

I used to be very romantic about the whole thing like matfanfold, but the number one priority in a game should always be fairness. I'm now for cameras and replay and whatever algorithms they can come up with that provides for the fairest play.

Thats cool, you are entitled to an opinion and it's quite valid. Many will probablly agree with you, but for me I'd rather keep is as 'human' as possible.

That is absolutely one of the worst calls we've ever seen!! Seriously, that for sure needed to be overturned..

I will back you up here, and not because I'm a Rockies fan! I just have a distaste for instant replay.

Seems like the home plate ump would have seen that. I don't get it, but it seems like they don't want to show each other up if someone misses a call.

Equally as bad was the check swing call of Brendan Ryan at the end of Humber's perfect game..

I agree that the check swing was questionable, but I have no issue with it considering there's no way they are going to give the hitter that in that moment.

In general check swings are more iffy anyway. There's no technical rule on them. It's up to the discretion of the ump if the batter intended to swing.
