Good post.

Anyone who roots for others' misfortune has serious mental issues.

Frankly its best for everyone if everyone were to remain NEUTRAL with regard to card values. Too positive an attitude (aka HYPE) leads to artificially high values that benefit short-term sellers at the expense of those buying/collecting cards.

People who root for misfortune likely aren't malicious in any way; rather they're likely attempting to neutralize hype.

Were Stubbs and Pagan 19 years old in AAA? (I agreed with you until that last line.)

OP never mentioned his age, only that his slow start didn't prevent him from "crushing" others. I wouldn't say that anyone who statistically compared to Drew Stubbs 2010 season crushed anyone, regardless of how old they were. But I get that he's only 19, so being Drew Stubbs at age 19 will clearly mean he's Hank Aaron by the time he's 25...

I was more impressed by Mike Trout at age 19 last year than I was by Bryce Harper at age 19 this year, but that's just me.

Anyway, Sjrmn91's post was clearly the best so far, so I quit.

What impressed you about Trout last year? I didn't see him play at all last year so it's an honest question. His stats seemed pretty sub-par.

i also want harper to fail, but its more about seeing stupid people paying 5 figures for baseball cards
getting screwed over. the difference between a hall off famer and an out of baseball scrubb is as simple as 5 hits per 100
at bats over an entire season, 25 hits a year, thats it. so why would a harper card demand up to
10-20K? is he going to be a 400 career hitter? hit 800 home runs? pretty good chance he will fall somewhere between
the 0-5 hits per 100 at bats, which means people buying at those prices and driving case prices and pack ripping
up are f**king morons, and i love to see those people get screwed.

Don't you sell baseball cards for a living? Seems a little counterproductive to be rooting for people who buy them to lose money.

What's wrong with hype? Everything interesting in the sports world is a byproduct of or a prelude to hype.

Are you saying that its the job of all baseball card sellers to say the cards they're selling will only increase in value? I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

That's like Coca-Cola saying people who buy their stock will never lose money. Obviously Coca-Cola wouldn't do that, in part, because it knows inflating/hyping its value will cause a bubble which will hurt everyone.

The "first 8 games" is the sum total of the sample size, so it is not a "small sample size". It is a fact - Heyward hit 3 more HRs in his first 8 games than Bryce Harper did. Harper may hit 50 this year, or he may hit more in the rest of his career, but one thing I can tell you for certain is that Heyward will always have hit 3 more HRs in his first 8 games than Harper did.

My point is merely a cautionary tale about judging someone after their first 8 major league games. And seriously, his minor league stats are about the equivalent of Drew Stubbs' or Angel Pagan's season in 2010. That is not "crushing" others.
Dude, 8 games is the definition of a small sample size. Heck, ONE season is not even a big enough sample size to truly know a player's mean output.

That's a dumb and broad paint brush. It's entirely possible to enjoy other talent, not just on your favorite team. I love watching all baseball, especially the elite players. Whether it's Harper, A-Rod, Pujols, Cabrera, etc.

I also don't understand the notion that someone HAS to have a favorite team. Why can't I enjoy the sport of baseball?

Wow, clearly we've all been using the wrong sales pitch when unloading our cards. Let's use the "unique", neutral way instead, and tell everyone this card will either appreciate or depreciate in value instead.

Except Harper had higher wOBA, SLG, OBP, wRC+ and a lower K% in his minor league career than Stubbs in 2010. But yes, clearly the same even though their skills sets are entirely different. Comparing him the Pagan? lololol

That is not "equivalent."

Ask the Tech industry and the Housing Market what happens when folks start to think like this...

The market won't drop because Harper drops. The market will drop because folks will decide that a piece of cardboard isn't worth what someone else thought it was.

He's basically come out and said that the reason he is rooting for Harper to fail is so that collectors will lose money. That seems counterproductive since his business is selling cards to those same collectors.

I'll ask the same question of you then...Are you saying that its the job of all baseball card sellers to say the cards they're selling will only increase in value?

fyi JH, loser, you are far more hated than i am
and have done exactly nothing in your lifetime for one person here.

Sorry, but that is 100% wrong. Will has hooked a LOT of people up on these boards - he's probably one of the most generous people I have encountered on FCB

I see what you're saying. He's just saying prices are too high - and he's right in that regard. Its easy for any of us to marvel at the ignorance of many buyers and the greed of many sellers.

I'm not his spokesperson, but as a seller, it seems he recognizes and is frustrated at what is not a good, sustainable hobby business model. We all know he's right but some people are still looking for short-term prices to go higher anyway.

Beat me to it, Eric.

Even if you consider his words/posts on here as "trolling", offensive, inconsiderate, or whatever else, his generosity can not be disputed.

There is a huge difference in saying you believe the market for a particular player or niche in the hobby is inflated and saying that you hope and want it to deflate. Why on earth would any good salesperson/businessperson hope and actively root for what they make a living on to depreciate in value.
