Ron, that is not a knock on Mays at all. Hell, I would be honored to bat behind Williams, Gehrig, and Ruth! You know those guys are going to get on base so Mays would be the guy to drive them in.

I mentioned earlier that I voted for Cobb and like I said this is the only thread I didn't vote for anyone else because 2nd place was just too close. After reading this thread I'm glad some people agreed with me and on the other hand, I do agree with sportscardstheorys comment about Cobb not winning a world series. However, when you look at teams like the Athletics who were absolutely stacked with pitching and hitting, the Red Sox who were pretty stacked as well, then you had the cubs with Evers Tinker and Chance. So although Cobb made three consecutive appearances without winning one, I think on pure talent and ability he should be regarded as the best CF of all time.

My feelings on deadball....
Would you vote George Mikan as the greatest Center of all time?
That's different IMO, although some would agree it's the same thing. Personally, I can't compare Chamberlain when it comes to an all-time greats argument because no one at the time was nearly as tall or strong as him whereas today many are. I'm not sure how he would have matched up against someone like Shaq or Dwight Howard physically. However with baseball, I think hitters can at least somewhat be compared, with pitchers it's hard since they pitched on was less rest. Cobb's numbers were like no one elses at the time for the stretch that he played. I think if he was a good guy and not a ****** he would be higher regarded today than he already is.
Another thing is, when I look at this list I see a lot of similar players like Mantle, Mays, Dimaggio, even Griffey was the same type of player as those guys. I think when you want a team of greatest players all-time they have to be unique, can't just be HR power hitters
OP said:Lets assemble the greatest team ever
ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? How the hell did Cobb NOT win this poll? Better yet, how does MANTLE have more votes than Cobb? Ugh, facepalms all around.
If I was making an all time team, it would be CENTERED around Tyrus Raymond Cobb. Hands down.
I'm curious as to the rest of your lineup....
If I am building a team of all time greats, I wouldn't even ask Lofton to be the team's bat boy.
You would? I think that's a bad move. To ask the question you asked earlier...
I hope your team doesn't have any black people on it!
Right? Because Ty Cobb would probably quit your team if you had a black bat boy.
We're building a team here. We want good people like the Mick who will bring beer to the game, we don't want racist ******** on our team.I voted for Mays and DiMaggio. I just didn't like how few votes he had. He's in that awesome song and everything....
About the Lofton thing, while I do think it's funny he got 3 votes, I don't think it's very important who is in the 9th spot in these polls. Only the top few really have a chance of winning. If Duke Snider was up there, and he got Kenny's 3 votes... what would that change?
There were guys in Cobbs era with similar numbers, Wagner, Speaker, Hornsby, Lajoie, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins, Ruth, etc.
