If I'm not mistaken, he got into it with Tim Hudson about two weeks ago, and you could hear him yelling at Hudson on the broadcast. I'm glad MLB is starting to hold umpires more accountable for their actions - it really is not always the players' or managers' fault for arguing calls or getting thrown out of games. Half of the time, umpires screw up and they are afraid to admit it and then they get defensive and have to use their "power" to throw people out.

This doesn't excuse Lawrie for his actions, but part of me wonders if the ump intentionally called strike three on an obvious ball to send a message he didn't like being showed up by Lawrie running to first.

This is exactly what I thought when I watched the replay. As long as the ball wasnt behind him or in the dirt, that next pitch was going to be a strike.

Lawrie acted ridiculously, but the umpire definitely instigated him.

Totally agree with you guys...but I don't think this is the umpire from the Lawrie incident.

Oh no, not at all. I was just saying that that umpire was definitely trying to show his power in that situation too.

"Balking" Bob Davidson is one of the worst umpires in MLB history. Its about time he gets suspended. He has been acting this way for years.

This has NOTHING to do with Brett Lawrie/

You guys have to realize though...it's got to be really hard to be an umpire and be right all of the time. And when you have a job where you have to make decisions that always piss off at least one of two parties, and you have to do so in a crowded ballpark, and your decision may not always be right, it's not easy. Instant replay and pitching trackers have made it even tougher. Tell me...who else has a job that is so under the spotlight and has as much public and organizational scrutiny? They have the fans, the players and coaches, and even baseball itself watching them every play of every game. That's gotta be tough.

I'm not saying it does. I was just noting an example where I feel umps sometimes intentionally have reactionary responses.

It has to be tough for sure. Maybe this happens more than I know, but it would be more refreshing to see umps own up to mistakes like Joyce did. In the long run players and fans would have more respect.
