My initial thoughts after Day 1.

Cubs Day 1 draft was kind of what I expected. Wish they would have went with another bat in the Supplemental.

Really liked what Texas did with their first two picks. Not sure they could have done much better than they did with Brinson and Gallo.

Houston obviously did well with their first two picks as well. The question is whether or not they can get both picks signed.

Jays also had a realy good draft Day 1. I think Stroman is going to be really good for them.

They were raving about him this morning. A work horse that keeps velocity (92-97mph) into later innings.

Top Drafts of Day One:

#1. Astros: Correa and McCullers. Only two picks but what a draft!!
#2. Oakland A's: Russell, Robertson, and Olson: Man, they just boosted their offense 1000%
#3. San Diego: Fried, Eflin, Jankowski, and Weickel: some awesome young pitching here
#4. Toronto: DJ Davis, Stroman, Smoral, Nay, and Gonzalez: I love the supplemental pickups of Smoral and Nay. Great value!!

I totally agree with this list and am VERY pleased with the A's draft!

Cubs need pitching! They did exactly as they should have with there supp picks

I guess I am going to have to disagree with you. They farm system is lacking impact batting prospects just as much as pitching. Only 2 teams have scored fewer runs that the Cubs this year. Obviously they are not picking for the now. I get that. It is just becoming more and more important to develop your own talent because so many teams are locking up their young stars early to long term deals. It is hard to rebuild your team through free agency without becoming financially burdened by large contracts which is what happened to the Cubs.

Theo picks Duane Underwood. Another name with plenty of helium.

The Cubs aren't scoring runs because all their elite prospects are low in the system but they have several nice hitting prospects.

I think you will like him. Plenty of upside. Here's BA's scouting report. I'll be listing his Bowman PG card tonight.

A Georgia signee, Underwood has plenty going for him. He has a quick arm and athletic frame at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, and if he winds up in Athens, he has a chance to contribute as both a hitter (he's a solid-average runner) and on the mound. He's young for the draft class as well, as he turns 18 in July. Pro scouts see him as a pitcher and a potential first-rounder on the right day, but that had not happened often enough in his senior season. Underwood at his best has a fastball that sits in the 91-94 mph range and touches 97-98. He has shown the ability to spin a breaking ball, though his curve often is soft in the 73-75 mph range and he tends to overthrow it. He has a firm but effective changeup, and this spring it has been his best pitch, in part because it's the pitch he controls the best. Underwood's fastball command has been erratic this spring, and his velocity often drops off quickly into the 87-92 mph range, and he hasn't shown much feel for pitching this spring. His mechanics are sound, though at times he loses his tempo and rushes his delivery. Scouts also want to see him handle adversity better. Scouts like Underwood and he had some supplemental-round buzz, but his inconsistent spring could knock him back a bit.
