Phillies Planning To Offer Hamels $120MM
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 16 at 3:52pm CST]
It appears that the Phillies are planning to offer Cole Hamels a contract extension worth at least $120MM, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. Though the Phillies hope to keep Hamels, people within the organization aren’t optimistic their forthcoming offer will convince the left-hander to sign a deal just a few months away from free agency.

Philadelphia left-hander Cliff Lee is in the second year of a five-year, $120MM contract that will likely come up in contract talks between the Phillies and agent John Boggs. Some rival officials have suggested the Phillies might have to match Johan Santana’s six-year, $137.5MM contract to lock Hamels up, however. Meanwhile, MLB agents have suggested that Hamels could earn upwards of $150MM as a free agent.

More than 57% of 11,500 MLBTR readers say they don't expect the sides to reach a deal. Plenty of teams have interest in discussing trade options if the Phillies can't sign Hamels long-term.

He'd be foolish not to take it....I don't see him getting more than that on the open market. That's $24 million a year. That's best in the game type money and he's not the best in the game.

With that being said, the Phillies are dumb for paying him that. Really really dumb. EDIT TO ADD: It would be the dumbest thing they've done since giving Ryan Howard $125 million for 5 years.

I disagree, with the state of pitching today he could earn some major money. You don't have to be best in the league just the best that's available.

He is not the best pitcher in the game but there are not alot of names above him and he's still 28...

He'll get more on the open market.

Funny this is being mentioned.....because on Saturday and Sunday as I was watching the free MLB games
Seemed almost everyone was taking about pitcher and Hamels and Dempster's name can up when talking trades.
I don't even think the phillies will keep him either way.

If they don't sign him long term do you guys think he will be traded by the trade deadline?

I think there are too many teams in the hunt right now to rule it out. Baltimore and Boston are 26th and 27th in ERA but are both in the hunt along with the Yankees who have Pettite, Sabathia, and Joba all banged up. I could see the teams fighting for him or at least all looking at upgrading.

Really though any AL Leader or contender is hurting for pitching right now.

I think he'll take it.

His wife likes the area. She's not from around here, but went to School here and has a bunch of endeavors going currently. Also, despite his surfer, laid-back "SoCal" look and attitude Philly fans have really warmed to him the last coupla years, even more than '08.

First, I think it's a little more than most places would or could offer. The only team that MIGHT bump it up is LA, his probable landing spot Just bought a new in-town house too, if that helps...

Second, they are still close to Contender status, especially if the "Big 3" stay together the next two years or so. Then as the others move on, retire, etc. Cole can be the ace as they have their next wave of starters like May, Biddle, etc. step in to the Rotation.

To quote a movie with my other role model, Vincent LaGuardia Gambini, "It's a bulls*it question!"

The Phils aren't planning to offer Hamels $120m. They're planning on offering AT LEAST $120m.

So, the offer could very well be a Santana-esque 6 years $137.5.

And anything less than 6/$150m is well worth it.
