Braves Have Acquired Ryan Dempster

I wonder if they'll have to give up anyone like Teheran or Bethancourt for him....

Braves Moving Toward Deal For Ryan Dempster
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 23 at 12:59pm CST]

12:59pm: The Braves seem to be close to acquiring Ryan Dempster, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (Twitter links). The Braves are believed to be high on the list of teams to which Dempster would approve a trade, Heyman notes. The right-hander, who can veto any trade, is not likely to demand an extension.

Dempster, 35, has an NL-best 2.11 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 98 innings for the Cubs this year. He earns $14MM in 2012 -- more than $5.5MM between now and the end of the season -- but the Cubs are said to be willing to absorb salary to facilitate a deal.

12:39pm: The Braves are moving closer to finalizing a trade for a starting pitcher, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (on Twitter). GM Frank Wren is known to be looking for starting pitching and reportedly has some interest in Zack Greinke, Ryan Dempster, Jon Lester, Jason Vargas and others.

Braves starters have combined for a 4.34 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 so far this year. The team's rotation currently consists of Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson, Mike Minor, Jair Jurrjens and newcomer Ben Sheets. Brandon Beachy and Arodys Vizcaino are out for the season with Tommy John surgery, which has diminished the organization's internal options. Here's a look at some potentially available starting pitchers.

I can't see them giving up a top prospect unless Dempster agreed to an extension.

Otherwise he's just a rental

It's for Delgado.

From Rotoworld:

Mark Bowman of MLB.com has confirmed that Cubs righty Ryan Dempster is being traded to the Braves.

Bowman is "hearing" that Randall Delgado will be sent to Chicago in return, but it sounds like talks are ongoing in regards to that piece of the puzzle. Dempster, 35, has posted a 2.11 ERA and 77/27 K/BB ratio in 98 innings (15 starts) this season for the last-place Cubs. He has a no-trade clause but is probably more than willing to join a contender like the Braves.

Fitting he would go to NL East...

Jayson Stark@jaysonst Dempster in 4 starts against NL East teams this year: 0.70 ERA, 29 strikeouts & only 16 hits in 25 innings

If in fact its for Delgado it's a great trade by Jed/Theo.

I find it interesting that Dejesus and Lahair are not in the lineup today. Wonder if one has been included in deal

Dejesus and Lahair normally don't play against left handed starters, since they're facing Bedard today, I wouldn't look too much into this

Ok I wasn't sure if they were putting their RH lineup out there against Bedard or if there was more to it

Klaw confirms it is in fact Randall Delgado, plus something to "balance the money".

Nice job of the Cubs getting a good young arm for him. Braves obviously want to make the playoffs after last year's epic meltdown and are willing to pay the price to try and make it happen.

Theo ain't done yet.

Report: Cubs talking Garza trade with Dodgers - According to ESPN's Jim Bowden, the Cubs are negotiating a trade that would send Matt Garza to the Dodgers for a package involving pitching prospect Zach Lee.

Lahair Maybe but not Dejesus. Dejesus tried to make a catch yesterday playing against the cards and it looked like he jammed his foot into the wall. So I think it is a day off for him.

I'm just curious as to why there is such hype for Zach Lee. Lee was solid in A ball last year (not spectacular), and has been disappointing to say the least so far this year (5.85 era amongst 17 starts in High-A and Double-A). How is he able to suffice as a lead prospect to get Garza? If he wasn't ranked so highly in top prospect lists to begin the season, I would've thought he was mediocre at best.

Looking at minor league stats is the wrong way to go. He obviously has stuff that scouts and teams love and that's all it takes.
