So I recently did a deal off eBay where I was the seller and the buyer pulled a clever move which I had not thought of before. I thought I would share it with you all and see if anyone else has seen it.

The buyer and I agreed to terms for paypal gift. I had my reservations because I had not done a deal with this guy but I didn't care because I was getting paypal gift and obviously first before sending the cards. Well the buyer sent regular paypal payment and then gifted the difference which was taken out for fees. I didn't notice the "move" because I saw the full amount of money reflected in my paypal account.

After thinking this through, this was a clever move by the buyer. The buyer essentially protecting himself by using regular paypal payment (refundable) for the amount agreed upon and then gifting the balance so I recieved the full amount in my paypal account. This way, if things didn't go to plan for him, he would only be out the small gifted payment.

Anyone else have this happen to them? I actually think it is very clever.

So he only gifted the paypal fees associated with the regular payment? It wasn't what was agreed upon, but as long as you complete your end of the deal and he's okay with being out more total dollars I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Exactly. So my paypal account reflected the amount of $ agreed upon but he was out a little more than agreed upon. Kind of a backwards way of paying IMO but maybe better for the buyer to protect himself.

If you have not sent yet.. Just refund all of it to him and move on. I think he will try to file something about this deal. And yes i have heard of this way of doing things before on another site. It did not end pretty when the guy claimed he never got the card and then when he did say he got it it was damaged and got all of his money back and never sent the card.

This may not be the case but i would just refund and walk away.

I don't think you can do that with a direct PayPal payment. There is no "item not as described" when you never actually bought an item off eBay. You DO have to have proof of shipment though, ie sig con or DC.

How is that any different than just sending $ to cover the fees?

You guys are way too paranoid, good God. He's protecting himself, but he's the bad guy because you want him to send it gift so he can't file a chargeback?

Never called him a bad guy... just thought it was clever.

And to your other point, I don't care how he wants to pay for the cards but if you have an alternative motive, just tell me. We negotiated based on "paypal gift" which he knows what that is, so if he didn't want to pay that way, just be upfront. That is all I'm saying.

I've read this a few times today, and only now do I think I finally understand what actually occurred lol.

Is there a chance he made the payment and realized it wasn't a gift and was simply being a good guy and had to do the second transaction to get the money agreed upon?
Because it really doesn't make much sense to me......I'm not sure how it is being "clever", The only clever part is that he is protecting himself. At this point it's pretty much a standard transaction. As a buyer there's no way I'd send a gift payment, if I was asked I'd send a regular payment and pay the fees myself to get the correct amount to the seller. (Which this buyer could have done here in the first place).

it doesnt make sense to me why wouldnt he just agree to pay the extra amount for the paypal fees so both parties are happy, you get your asking price and you are both protected?

If I'm buying something via Paypal I will not send gift payment. If the seller wan'ts $15.00 gift, I'll just send them $15.76 so that after the fees the seller get's $15 flat.

Totally understand and get it. This isn't a thread about gifting versus not gifting. I've done deals every which way. It was just this guy negotiated via "gift" and when payment was sent it was done differently and it just had me thinking.

I like how he did it but just found it odd he wouldn't just come out and tell me how he was going to pay. Made me think he was being clever and had alternative motives.

Like most of you are commenting. If you don't do gift, then lets talk price I'll see after fees and I don't care at all how you get there. Can send check, cash, PayPal, etc.

You are missing the point.

The only point of accepting a gift payment is to avoid fees, not to make it so a buyer has no recourse whatsoever.

Okay, I'll own it, I must of done a horrible job of explains this and my take lol.

I care less how anyone pays for anything. My only point is someone negotiates as "PayPal gift" and when he goes to pay he pays differently... That's it... Just had me confused and I guess I'm wrong for thinking he had an alternative motive or wanting to be clever lol.

OR someone earlier did stat, he has seen this activity before and someone did get screwed... so I am all sorts of confused. [insert emoticon slapping forehead]
