Any idea where an unnumbered copy might have come from?

I was the seller through boomo. My best guess is it was held back for a replacement and then went out as a replacement either for a numbered one or something else. I'm very happy with the sale as I had less than half that in it.

Makes sense. I actually thought it ended around where I'd have expected, maybe slightly on the high side, but fair for the current market. Nice flip on your part though.

does anybody remember the Barry Bonds
card gu card that resembled the POH 500 cards?

a member used it to fill in
the bonds spot for his set

Yes I had Mike make these early last year or the year before  Mike Does absolutely fantastic work as these 2 cards are actually better well made than the Originals. I have something else in the works that I will be contacting mike on but need to make sure I have all the right certified pieces

Upper Deck A Piece of History 500 HR Club

[h=1]Description[/h]The Upper Deck A Piece of History 500 HR Club, is a multi-brand, game-used set featuring all members (except Barry Bonds) of the 500 Home Run Club.
Beginning in 1999, Upper Deck inserted into various products cards featuring a piece of a game-used bat. The first group of 15 cards were randomly inserted into 1999 and early 2000 Upper Deck baseball sets.
As more players reached the 500 HR milestone, new cards were added.
With the exception of Babe Ruth, approximately 350 of each card was produced. Only 50 Babe Ruth's were made.
Since Barry Bonds was exclusive to Topps at the time he reached the 500 HR milestone, he was unable to be included in this set.
[h=1]Checklist[/h][h=2]1999 Series One Babe Ruth[/h]Randomly inserted into packs of 1999 Upper Deck Series One, was a special card featuring chip from an actual game-used Louisville Slugger swung by Babe Ruth during the late 20's. Upper Deck purchased a (cracked) Ruth bat at an auction for over $23,000 in 1998 for the expressed intention of cutting it up and mounting the pieces onto trading cards. Upper Deck received plenty of negative publicity in the mainstream sports media for destroying such a "priceless" (albeit chipped) artifact.
Approximately 350 cards were made and seeded into packs at a rate of 1:15,000. Another insert card incorporates both a "cut" signature of Ruth along with a piece of his game-used bat. Only three of these cards were produced.
Neither the bat card, nor the cut signature card are considered part of the A Piece of History 500 HR Club set listed below; however, becuase the Series One Ruth card is titled "A Piece of History," we are checklisting this card for your collecting convenience.

[h=2]1999-2000[/h]A Piece of History cards from the original 1999-2000 run were released in the following products:

It is unclear how card #ARM was distributed; however, less than 10 copies of this triple-bat card are known to exist.
A one-of-one "Instant Winner" card was randomly inserted into packs of 2000 Upper Deck Series One, in which one lucky collector would win one copy of each card from the 1999-2000 run.

[h=2]2002[/h]This card was released into packs of 2002 Upper Deck Series Two. McGwire, who had hit his 500th home run during the 1999 season, had requested to not be included in the original 1999-2000 run. However in 2002, McGwire signed an exclusive autograph contract with Upper Deck and as part of the deal, UD was finally allowed to include McGwire in the A Piece of History set.

[h=2]Autographs[/h]As part of the Upper Deck A Piece of History 500 Club series, Upper Deck had most of the living members of the 500 homer club sign a number of their bat cards. Each player's autographed card was inserted into the same product as the un-autographed versions listed above.
In most cases, each autographed version is serial-numbered to the player's uniform number. Unlike the non-autographed version, each autographed card is hand-numbered.
NOTES:

  • The Mickey Mantle card is a cut-signature.

  • The Sammy Sosa autograph card packed out as an exchange card which expired in 2006.

  • The autograph program was stopped after 2004, and as a result, autographed A Piece of History Cards do not exist for Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, and Gary Sheffield.

  • Ken Griffey, Jr. autographed 25 copies of his card for random insertions into packs of 2004 Upper Deck Etchings. Griffey never wore uniform #25.

Did anyone see the APOH 500 (non auto) set at the National? There was a seller there who was trying to move it - absolutely beautiful to see them all together, but a bit pricey for me.

I have a random question - does anyone know what the print run is for the more recently issued cards (i.e. Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Manny and Sheff). Is it still fair to approximate 350 cards for each?

Thomas and Thome were something like one per case. I would assume 1000 copies or more. Pretty sure manny also had a much higher print run. Sheffield pretty sure was /350 but someone else can confirm.

I don't even understand what it was that was sold. And it's weird that like a week earlier the same listing sold for $25 w/ free ship?

That's really odd, a pic of a piece of paper, not the cards......

Yeah, very weird. Only thing I can think of is he has a sick collection and they are in a bank vault and just has pics of what he has for selling/insurance reasons.

I buy and sell them from time to time..

The value has come down on some, but I still think they are a great set to build..

Hey Pin, thanks for the reply. What do the sales on the Ruth's look like? Still pretty strong?

The regular Ruth is one of the ones that continues to slowly trend upwards, but the SP Ruth I think is down from its peak, at least in my observation. The regulars come up infrequently, and then usually as part of a set break, which I think dilutes values as people who win one card may not be willing or able to bid on others. The SP Ruth is still a tremendous card but as more and more Ruth pieces come out in high-end Panini products its down from its peak. But as one of the few GU cards in the hobby that has actual provenance (remember the hype UD made for it, publicizing their purchase, pictures showing it on the band saw, etc.), as well as being part of a cornerstone modern insert set, it's probably an evergreen card.

Was there really a 4-year gap in this thread? AFAIK, this is still a popular, chased set, although there is not the frenzy there was years ago.

Appreciate the responses guys! Man, what a beautiful set. This is my favorite insert of all-time and I was actually bringing it back up because I purchased the SP 500 Club Ruth for $650 and was wondering if I got a good deal.
