Just read that too. People always complain about Pitt having no money, but when you have piss poor management like that, you can have all the money in the world and still perform like the Pirates.

Been hearing about this laughing stock training crap on the radio for a couple months. Even the radio hosts are laughing about it.

My favorite was, a week after Nutting's interview about the status quo not being good enough and things had to change, Coonley came out and said everyone's job was safe and defended that moronic training crap!

local minor league team was low "A" of Pirates for about 15 years and we had some good players but just didn't work . Several years ago there was twenty players that played here playing for other teams and only three on Pirates roster . We have since changed to Rangers LOOK at Profar he played here .

Yea, I would shy away too after reading this (From another article)....

...Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan reports that players engaged in hand-to-hand combat, and that one top prospect, pitcher Jameson Taillon, once injured his knee in that type of training. The Tribune says drill sergeants were putting the players through these activities and yelling at them the entire time.

Doesn't surprise that they haven't sniffed the playoffs since 1992 when this is the kind of stuff that is happening, and being tolerated, within the organization. Those are football drills, not baseball drills. It's a wonder no one was more seriously injured.

awesome less competition for me. Really this is nothing big IMO, the issue was running him out there not the drills. Their medical staff should be fired. Stark should be fired for reasons other than this, this is just icing on the cake.

What sticks out to me about all this was the Mark Appel retweet of the story. There were rumors going around that Appel wasnt happy when the Pirates selected him and maybe he was aware of the weirdness of the Pirates system. I have read that these type of pratices were happening before the 2012 season.

Appel was only unhappy about not getting 8 million dollars and the Pirates punting the rest of their draft and losing a pick next year. It wasn't going to happen, and BTW he was terribly overrated as a prospect anyway.

As far as Polanco being hurt, it doesn't look like it was that bad

Per Tim on Twitter
@timwilliamsp2: I received word today that Polanco played the last day of instructs, left with a clean bill of health & is in the DR with his DWL team

Yeah DK is a terrible writer with a vendetta against this FO, whom I believe should be fired but not for this.

Maybe the Pirates should do this with the ML roster instead of their farm system ...

How does this training make any one of those guys better baseball players?

This is the kind of XXXX I hated when I played: coaches would come up with these insane conditioning drills that served no purpose except to punish people and push everyone over the edge. How does carrying kegs full of sand over your head help anything baseball related? Seriously...I read that article this morning and have been trying to think of a way it's beneficial for a baseball player.

No wonder the pirates suck.

Not only is not beneficial baseball wise, but increases injury probability greatly. Fools.

One thing the Pirates questioned last year during Instructs was toughness. What does Tony Sanchez do that night after a motivation speech. Breaks his jaw in a bar fight and then this tidbit to a female reporter in Pittsburgh yesterday:

Tony Sanchez adds this - "We are as prepared to succeed, if not more, than any other organization in the MLB. Not just physically but mentally as well."

Josh Bell said he wasnt doing the excercises.

Some of the players bought in to it and some left early.

And I'm sure they all make injured players participate.

You didn't read the story. Polanco played the last week of the season and had 2 weeks off in between, so he was fully healthy, is fully healthy and plaing in the Dominican Leagues right now. This isn't a big deal, their drafting history is

From K Law chat today.
How would you handle the odd player development news in Pittsburgh if you just now named the GM because we know if you were the GM this wouldn't have occured?
Klaw (1:07 PM)

It wouldn't have occurred if anyone else were the GM, as far as I can tell. I've spoken to senior execs from multiple other clubs, and not only did they all say they've never even considered this kind of 'training' exercise, they all offered derisive comments about what the Pirates are doing. Assuming the Pirates do make a GM change as a result of this, I would expect player development to be cleaned out. You need a fresh start to reestablish credibility within the industry and with your own players, that we're not going to put you at risk or treat you in such a demeaning fashion any more.

That might be the part that bothers me the most. These players are adults. Stop treating them like freaking boarding school students
