My point was that to get to that level in SF you have to be like Mays or in other words the best player. You don't have to be if you play in NY.

Ah, ok. I do not disagree.

What I do think is that Posey is going to be a perennial MVP candidate and a leader of the new Dynasty. Michael Jordan made the Bulls, not the other way around. Posey is going to lead his team in to becoming a dynasty, all the while raking in the AS games, MVP awards, ect... 5 years from now they will not be the Giants, they will be the GIANTS!!!111!11BBQ

Wasn't Pujols supposed to be the new Jeter of baseball? Also, I don't think he was trying to say Jeter was the best player in baseball but rather a player will have to be the best to over take Jeter outside of NY. I still think Posey is boring as a complete outsider who doesn't pay much attention to SF outside of the playoffs. And he looks like he could be on one of those Amish out of order shows

That's exactly what I meant.

As far as Pujols, I think it's really difficult for a foreign player to connect on the level needed to be the face of baseball.

Also, I agree with what has been said already. It helps to be loved by the ladies. It's like Brady and Manning. Both are superstars, and have the stats, but yet Brady is on another level as far as popularity because Manning looks like a bronco.

Thinking about the Bulls. If someone came in a took the Cubs to multiple championships they would be HUGE. That's a situation ripe for someone to be the face of baseball.

Yeah, I think I agree with that also.

I love when people post what they think is gold, then get pissed when people tell them they are wrong.

Buster Posey will be all that and more

1. Catchers tend to wear out faster than other players, a lot of his value is tied to him being a catcher. Moving him to 1B will diminish his appeal to collectors and fans.
2. All this talk of dynasty is really far fetched. The Giants were lucky to even make it by the Reds, they are not even close to being a dominant team, especially if Lincecum continues to get worse.
3. Why ask the question for peoples opinion, only to argue with each person stating a reason why not? Sounds like you were just expecting a bunch of people just to agree with you and when it didn't happen you threw a fit.

I do as well. Chicago has a huge fan base. But they just can't get the world series monkey off their back. If they ever win one, the whole damn team will be Jeter status!

LMFAO, what did they just do in the World Series? They won 6 elimination games, won 7 straight games to end the playoffs and that isn't dominant?

Anyways, I don't think he will be Jeter simply for the reason that he is on the West Coast, people won't stay up to watch him or give him as much coverage in order for the average Joe to know who he is.

Posey is a key component in what could very well become a dynasty in San Francisco with two World Series rings in the last three seasons. Of course, they are not New York, so he will never be able reach Jeter status. BUT, I get what the OP is getting at. With 2 WS rings, a ROY award and quite possible an MVP Award, all by age 25, he certainly stacks up with Jetes in the hardware column after only three years in the league. Mauer may be a better pure hitter (yet has no WS rings at age 29) and Molina is the better defensive player (who also has two WS rings but is already 30), but Posey has done this all before his age-26 season.

I understand what you're saying and partly agree, but there are exceptions.
The West Coast didn't prevent Ken Griffey, Jr. from being the face of baseball in the '90s. And his team never made the World Series.
It didn't hurt Joe Montana or Jerry Rice or Steve Young or Magic Johnson or Kobe Bryant or Shaq either.
Or even Wayne Gretzky.
Of course, those are all legends who transcend their sport. I don't see Posey coming anywhere close to that.

As a comparison to Posey's offense as catcher, Mike Piazza played for glamorous LA and NY, and he still didn't reach the widespread stardom of Jeter or Griffey. But he was close.
Posey just seems like a nice, humble, boy next door type, like Joe Mauer.

Can't compare Griffey with Posey either. Wasn't Jr poised to be a huge star from the start (kind of like Harper)?

Catcher's faces are covered 85% (total guess) of the game. That's pretty hard to overcome.

Getting hot at the right time is not dominant, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they missed the playoffs next season.

That and when his mask is off he looks like a 12 yr old. There's even a commercial on KNBR that states as much. And this brings us back to the sex appeal aspect of it. I live in the Bay Area and I hear more people talke about Brandon Crawford than Posey on a regular basis. Sure, they all know Posey is the team's best player, but Crawford and that nappy wick of his get a lot of pub, especially with the broader population (ie, the ladies).

For the common man and woman, you have to show personality to become famous. I'd argue that Jeter should be more famous and well known than he is. He has never tried to market himself in the same way that a Manning or LeBron has, perhaps because he didn't care to do so. Buster is a great player and a good guy, but he's quiet. He won't be the face of baseball for that reason.

P.S.: If Evan Longoria ever gets to New York, Boston, or the Cubs, he will be the guy. Not saying he's the best player, but he's marketable and doesn't seem to mind putting himself out there.

Sweeping the triple crown winner and the best pitcher in the game 4-0 is dominant....no way around that..Mr. Triple Crown bust left standing at home plate while his team's season on the line and Verlander getting romped by Sandoval is dominant...not to mention Leyland teary eyed during interviews because he knew his team just got the sxxt kicked outta them is dominant! Posey is a superstar, if only on the west coast/bay area so be it.....Giants dynasty, believe it, and Posey leading the way....
