I think it's ridiculous for any collector to expect "gem mint" cards from any dealer/manufacturer, whether it's through ebay or "pack fresh". Bottom line is, Brian, there's nothing you can do that's not going to garner criticism.

You cannot believe how many people send in customer service for scratches/etc then the cards are 9 or better (usually 9.5)...


As a collector, I appreciate getting all gem mints, but as a manufacturer we cannot guarantee better than nrmt-mt .. I don't think any manufacturer does... Maybe this is one of the few "condition sensitive" valiant sets.... BG

While I agree with your premise. Leaf prospect sets (metal and valiant) have proven to be excellent grading fodder. Look at Firstclasscardguys who sends the Leaf valiant products directly to BGS without even opening them. There is a reason for this. To expect gem mint cards isn't right. But at the same time, a brand, a product, sets certain expectations over a couple a years. So for collectors to begin to expect these cards to be in excellent shape isn't that far fetched.

Those cards you're talking about are individually penny sleeved and top-loadered in the factory and don't ever touch another card after being received from the player. These are packed together as a set. They have more contact with one other.

I still think expecting Gem Mint 9.5s from eBay is in the category of "unreasonable expectations".

I tried to scan a couple of mine but no luck getting the scratches to show, I have an 8 year old Dell scanner so I'm not surprised. The scratches seem to be in the same spot on each of the cards so it must have been something during the print process that got them all. The worst part of them is that they are all right in the star section which makes them pop out pretty strong in person. Maybe in the colored part of the card they would not be so obvious. I'm not planning to sell mine at this point but I would be very worried they would end up in a refund request.

The packaging was secure as noted, just no sleeves. I had two sets packaged in a plastic container with foam on the bottom and some cardboard filler between sets and on top. I'd say that the packaging was good enough to keep the cards in the same condition they were packed in. So in my opinion any scratching was not due to the packaging but would be manufacturing or handling before packaging. Again for my sets I don't see a major issue, others can only speak for their own sets.

Wish I would have seen this when this was first posted, but it was nice of everyone to leave the base sets for me. Bought them out. Should be interesting to see how player lots sell instead of being in set form.

I'd make a comment about the early worm here except that I was a week late. I wish I wouldn't have missed out on all the low numbered stuff. Now I have to convince people that there really were only 120 made...oh well. Unless BG wants to serialize those last 76 sets for me... [MENTION=1948]Leaf[/MENTION] ?

If the base sets were serial #ed, I think they would've sold out even faster. Honestly, I bought a lot of orange and purples (missed the golds) but didn't touch the base because of the lack of S/N.

I received one of my four sets today, the #/25 Purple Valiant Stars and can see the scratching issues referred to here. Mostly in the center of the card. And while most have some scratching, it's the edges that are jumping out to me. The laminate appears to be bubbling/separating slightly, although it appears to be fully adhered.

As for the base sets not experiencing the scratches, I find that hard to believe considering the stock is the same.

I'd say BGS 9.5s could be a premium, but everything is so limited, it seems unlikely to make a real impact on a one for one basis.

Dang, that was the same issue I had with the cards from the 2012 Valiant Football/Baseball releases. I was hoping it would be corrected for this set. FWIW, BGS actually considers that a "surface" issue, and not edges, when it comes to grading them. Slightly peeling edges will cause surface to drop to 9. So if there are numerous scratches on top of that, I'd guess surface becomes 8.5

I've been selling low numbered leaf stuff raw on ebay quite well and I'm seeing 9.5's and 10's that aren't getting any premium. Then again, if your sales technique is .99 and let it ride, that's a sure fire way to lose money on Leaf.

9.5's don't get much of a premium, unless the right buyer comes along. 10's still get a decent premium, except when sold under .99 auction format, which is horrible for a lot of things, not just Leaf.

Got my sets yeterday (1 #/25 & 2 #/50). The Orange /50 all have scrathes but no real problem with the edges. But my purple set does have the edge issue along with the scratches. Also the packaging for one set was great and the other two not so much. They didn't put any styrofoam in one of the plastic boxes so the sets were moving pretty freely. Not all cards were damaged. The only one the was significant was the RGIII purple. Bottom right corner in the scan below.
