Further proof, as if we needed it, that Randy Moss is pretty Clueless.

He stated, and then re-stated when asked a follow-up, that he is the "greatest" WR ever. Here's the exact quote so there is no confusion about meaning, context, etc.

"No dis-respect to Jerry, now that I'm older, I do think I'm the greatest receiver to ever do it," Moss said at Super Bowl media day in New Orleans.

Moss acknowledged that this season with the San Francisco 49ers "has been a down year for me statistically" as was his 2010 season before he retired for a year and his last season with the Oakland Raiders (2006) before his trade to the New England Patriots. He said, however, that he doesn't think statistics should determine greatness.

"I don't really live on numbers, I really live on impact and what you're able to do out on the field," he said Tuesday. "I really think I'm the greatest receiver to ever play this game."

Two problems for me with all this. Now I admit I've never been a Moss fan, for many reasons.

1. He's wrong. Top 5 could be argued, and at times, he was more "feared" by DBs, but his all-around Career is not even close to #1 all-time.

2. Even if you believe it, why say it? Especially when two of the guys in the argument were mentors of yours, that you consider friends.

Just typical Randy Moss-type stuff... ::facepalm::

Great WR, but completely self-absorbed. I don't think there are many knowledgeable football people who would take Moss' prime over Rice's prime. Moss didn't lead the league in receptions or receiving yards ONCE. No contest.

Led league in either receptions, receiving yards or touchdowns

Rice - 14 times
Moss - 5 times (all TDs)

Yeah, you are better than Rice, Randy. lol

I don't think he was as great as Chris Carter

I don't even think he was good as TO. I know TO had his issues too, but his performance on the field was always high and he never took plays off like Moss did.

He was probably the most talented wide receiver of all time. Probably the least motivated and dedicated. Ill say I think he's behind rice and rice alone. With Calvin Johnson moving in on them rapidly.

Agree with everything you said 100%.

Would be the best all time had he tried. And that is tough for me to say because I am a 49er and Jerry rice fan. Moss burst on to the scene and was a freak athlete at that position. He helped change it to a larger more physical position. He is right behind Rice in my opinion.

would have been fun to see him on consistent superbowl & deep playoff run quality teams like Rice, but I'd still put him at 2nd.

He does know he plays for the 49'ers, right?
The same team that Montana and Rice dominated the 80s and 90s with, right?

HoF sure. GOAT no way.

I don't measure WRs on receptions. The offense and defense played dictates a lot of that. Randy Moss was the most dangerous WR of all time.

What about everything else? Because Jerry Rice just about has Moss in nearly every possible receiving statistic. The only record I can recall Moss ever breaking, of Rice's nearly 50 NFL receiving records, was TD receptions in a season.

I don't dispute that Rice is the best. I dispute using receptions to rank WRs. It would be like ranking RBs based on carries.

I stand by choice that Moss in his prime was the most dangerous WR to a defense in NFL history.

I agree that Moss was definately the most dangerous. He was almost unstoppable when he wanted to be. Jerry Rice doesn't even dispute that Moss was much more physically gifted than him. The work ethic just wasn't there with Moss. Reminds me a lot of Mike Tyson, oh what could have been if they just committed 100%.
