Re: Updates from vegas industry summit

I think if any compay does get a license after Topps contract expires in 2014, it will be Panini. They turned some heads with NT. If they can make unlicensed cards look that beautiful, wait til they can start throwing logos on that stuff.

Licencing has nothing to do with the opinions of the collector and everything to do with what type of contracts the two parties are willing to sign.

And whether or not there is still bad blood from having to sue Panini's former entity, Donruss, and Donruss' subsequent dismantling before resolution could be met, in regard to the blatant disregard of the MLB trademarks.

Probably not. Judy heeter is no longer there and none of the old management guard at panini is still involved.

Of course, and I think Panini will work to get something completed. They are obviously interested and i think NT was a move to position themselves for such a move.

MONDAY

LEAF:

Brian gray gave an awesome presentation. I wish it was filmed.

He pulled back the curtain a bit on the hobby. For instance, it costs panini 20% in royalties for nba license.

When asked if leaf would have interest in a license, he said "sure, if it makes sense financially"

Also, every single auto that was issued as a redemption is now live. Nothing is pending.

"matrix" is a new product coming out combining "metal" & valiant technology.

When asked how he gets autos from players/ celebrities who never sign, he said "money"

Case in point, patrick ewing autos.

About half of the upcoming products will be "pack friendly"

Lillard wasn't an initial exclusive, he just wouldn't take the low ball offer from panini. He also won't sign panini cards ip.

leaf is huge into first amendment rights to produce cards, as is shown by the recent johnny heisman & al pacino cut autos.

New wrestling its coming with much better art, many first timers, hulk hogan & coa on the back of cards.

Also, frank thomas is the suprise auto guest coming in an hour.

Heres frank, super nice & HUGE!

FYI: you'll see these cards on ebay no doubt but theres less than most realize because people were getting baseballs signed instead of the exclusive cards.

Brian, if I got anything wrong, plmk.

Yes nt was a warmup in their eyes.

They also have carvin chung doing products, and that's a good thing.

I like the Wild West stuff... but if they have no "famous" ties then those aren't worth much outside of the fact that they are in the product.

I'd pay decent money for them regardless, but I'm also a big Wild West/History guy.

And by combining is it safe to assume this means once again killing the value of the other 2?

Topps makes multiple products around prospects and all have their niche, why is it when leaf does it they are killing the value of their other products?

The checklist for the three prospect products they put out this year -- Ultimate, Metal, and Valiant, were almost identical - pictures included, I think.

Topps does the same things. Problem with leaf is they havent developed a base since they are really only 2 years in with valiant/metal...

No the problem is cloning topps bad ideas and then somehow using that to justify it. Whats next? Leaf cut autographs with "Mickey Mant" cause they couldnt fit it? Cause you know topps does it. Or how about some GU cards where who knows where the GU came from. Hey topps does it right?

The combined print run of all three is similar to a bowman run.

For some reason it irks me when I read about the "First Amendment" claims surrounding a release.

Legal or not (and I think it might be up for debate, or at least litigation), it just seems...unseemly. For a company that makes a big hullabaloo about how favorable its contracts are with individual players, and that leading to prominent card companies being unable to sign players because they've paid them so generously, this just reeks of exploitative.

I get it. Collectors want it. But for some reason, I just wish companies stuck to material that was derived from a contract between the relevant parties (or their estates, for deceased folks).

Of course I'm in the minority here. I like the constitution and the law around it AND I like sports cards. But I don't like it when they get so intertwined. What is the world really losing by having to wait a year or so for Manziel certified and compensated for cards?

I'd love to own an old gambling kit. (Yes, yes.. like on pawn Stars but not because of Pawn Stars)

Agreed. But it has to be all original, right? It can't be a bunch of different parts from different sets because, let's be honest, there's not much of a market for sets that aren't original and it would take months of it sitting on the shelves to sell....
