Age difference is significant in that comparison. LaPorta debuted at 24, Montero is still only 23 and has over a full season (albeit a disappointing one) under his belt. He hit .295/.330/.438 away from Safeco last year, so there's still some hope for a resurgence. Approach needs a ton of work. Getting out from behind the plate may help.

Honest question since I don't see Montero hit often. What's wrong with his approach? He was never a high walk guy in the minors, but his walks have dropped in the majors. Is that what you are referring to? Is he getting tied up inside, perhaps? He always had some nice power to right, but perhaps everyone is pounding him in with the fastball and then getting him to chase off speed down and away? As I said, just curious.

Hitting .119 against curveballs. Needs to make the adjustment to a league that is pounding him with offspeed.

The Mariners organization continue to put players in a position to fail. Their offensive rebuild was around Montero/Smoak/Ackley as of a few years ago... they are continuing with these guys committed to find out if they can still become quality players. As of last season they already knew Montero could NOT catch. He was 3rd on the depth chart and was used as mainly DH/only C'd back to back when guys were hurt. He hit .260/15/62 and seemed to be learning at least.

Going into this year/offseason they knew the Smoak Project was still going to be happening at 1B. The catcher of the future is Zunino, who you spend your first round pick on. DH was open in theory to Montero, so he can exclusively spent his time working on his strength and future- hitting. Instead the M's trade SP (upper 3s era guy) Vargas (3.4era right now) for a quality guy in Morales "when healthy" . iirc Morales is a Boras guy on his last year of contract so if he does something on a rebuild year he wont be coming back and if he does nothing then you lose the trade. Meanwhile your 3-5 guys in the rotation are hopeless and near the worst in the league, whereas the guy you traded a stud in Pineda for is wasting all his energy flailing around at catcher when its clear he cant handle any catching duties.

I understand its the players job in the end to improve, but I dont think the Mariners are helping... ever.
