Speculation is that there may be around 50,000 Ripken errors, rather than the 250,000 or so of an individual player in a normal press run.

Talking about the 1989 Fleer Ripken FF error. 250k. Wow.

Unsure when the peak was, but do know in was still strong in 1990 when I saw pallets of Donruss in Costco (Wholesale warehouse)

From a historical standpoint WWII helped cause the scarcity of many of today's collectibles. There were great shortages in paper and metals. Huge recycling drives were done to be able to get materials to help with the war effort. People that lived through the Great Depression even participated in these efforts because it was so important. Anyone over 40, think back to your grandparents. Many of them were probably savers/borderline horders thinking that one day an object could be usefull all from living through the GD.
