Ruben Mateo

The owner of the card shop I worked at in 1998 (college job) had a PSA 10 1998 Leaf Rookies and Stars Ruben Mateo shortprint rookie card that he sold for $800 back when he was the next Juan Gonzalez. I'd hate to be the guy that bought it, unless he somehow flipped it quickly. I imagine mutliple people may have lost a ton of money on that card unless it found its way into a PSA graded set. The PSA 9 can be had for $1.99 BIN/BO on eBay.

I also have the 2000 SPx Spectrum 1/1 parallel of Mateo. Will post a scan once I find it.

The 1998 BB Mirror Image set had a number of prospects that never panned out:

Hidalgo did sign a $45 million contract, so he did alright for himself.

If I recall, Shane Spencer was ineligible to be pictured on a Topps cards because he was a replacement player. Not sure how he was eligible to be pictured on a Bowman RC.
