Think I pulled his Gold Auto today: Adys Portillo.

Adys Portillo Minor League Statistics & History - Baseball-Reference.com

If you don't want to read the ugly numbers yourself, he's 14-38 in 5 seasons, most with SD's A-ball Fort Wayne. ERA of 4.38, WHIP of 1.53, SO/BB is just about 3/2. He's 21, but never made it above A ball and missed almost all of 2013. Every team he's been on, he's the worst starter.

Is there something magical about this guy, or did Topps just throw him in because they got him to sign for $20 and a six pack of Red Bull?

It is crazy when you think of all the talent the entire MLB farm system has that guys like this somehow 'make the cut'....

See, that's at least a good pull as a 1/1 plate, there are going to be collectors for those regardless of who it is.

This year's auto selection is looking pretty piss-poor (lots of quantity over quality), so I think most buyers will be in the same boat. I've also pulled two base autos, and they both sell for around $2 on ebay (Keury de la Cruz and Danry Vazquez).

Not saying he is a prospect but he is 21 and in 335 innings, he allowed 315 hits and struck out 321 hitters.

He sort of had a breakout season in low-a in 2012, stumbled in AA was hurt in 2013.

I'd give him a few more years before writing him off.

He's definitely got some upside. He's not going to go to the hall but could definitely find himself in San Diego in the next couple of years.

It has not been uncommon for topps to get a decent deal on an established player's autos by purchasing the autos of some of the player's agent's other clients. Dunno if that was the case here, but could have been.

I believe Adys Portillo is Japanese, is ambidextrous, dated Kim Kardashian, and was voted "most popular Yankee"... your card may be a diamond in the rough!

Yes. This is most likely an economic decision designed to fill product without the large expense of a bigger-prospect's signing contract.

From Padres in the Arizona Fall League - Grading on the Curve - A Minor League Baseball Site - Draft and Prospect News, Blogs, Opinion and More
Adys Portillo-He was signed as a 17-year old out of Venezuela and now at age 21, may have the best arm in the Padres’ system. Portillo’s fastball can hit 100 and he has the ability to throw above average curves and changeups. The righty was a force at Fort Wayne in 2012 with a 1.87 ERA in 91 2/3 innings pitched, allowing only 54 hits. Command has been an issue for him so if he can control the number of walks, Sn Diego believes he has all of the tools to be an excellent starter. The #8 prospect, Portillo is on track to be on the big club in 2015.
He's gonna be in the AFL this year as well.

there are quite a few good value pick ups for those not breaking the product. I for one enjoy when large amounts of collectors write off a product for lack of big names.

Its all about how deep the waters are. Lotta crap in this....which takes away from you even hitting one of the value guys with upside. In 20 years we could look back at all the Bowman Chromes....and this will be one of the worst, hands down.

I'll disagree, there are alot of guys in this product who have a chance to be very solid and make some money down the line. I'll agree that the current high profile guys are missing but this set has alot of potential...

I think the same would have been said for every BC product ever put out.

I'll have to disagree though....this one is going down as a royal stinker. $56 a box on blowout for a product that has the chase rookie of the year in it? That's bad.
