I own a store and you'd be surprised how many former collectors tell me they have great "old" cards from the 80s and 90s.

Or topps rookie cards of "baby" Ruth and Jordan.

And how many times these same collectors don't understand grading and think just because a psa 10 1986 Ryan sold for a grand that their UN graded must be worth a few hundred.

Or he could be just fishing for a sucker.

I believe it. Nearly every time I'm in my LCS the owner gets a call from a local person who has "a lot of baseball cards they want to sell" and in the end the owner tells them to not even bother bringing it in.

I don't think I could ever own a store just for that reason... after awhile I think I would get frustrated from having to explain so often that your collection of cards is worthless. Everytime I meet someone and they find out I collect cards, they always want to show me their childhood collection and know how much it's worth. It's always a bunch of dinged up over produced 80's and 90's stuff. They always have that hopeful look in their eyes that it may be worth hundreds or more, and I always have to dash their hopes.

I kill this notion up-front when amateurs start talking about sports memoribilia now. The first thing I say is, "...please don't get your hopes up....most of the late 80's early 90's stuff isn't worth the cardboard it's printed on....". Saves a lot of, "what about this one....this HAS to be worth something......".
