No mention of the offer amount. With how much the Tigers are trying to cut back on payroll it could have been a low offer compared to what Verlander and Kershaw are getting.

This doesn't make sense.

In January Scherzer accepted a 1 year deal for the 2014 season of $15 Mil.

Why would he turn a supposed offer today only 2 months later of possibly $24 Mil /year. (That number is an estimate based on the highest paid pitchers.)

Is this a ploy by Dombrowski to put pressure on Scherzer to agree to a deal before Opening Day?

Discuss.

"Max Scherzer made a substantial long-term contract extension offer to the Detroit Tigers that would have placed him among the highest-paid pitchers in baseball, and the offer was rejected by Detroit," Boras said.

There you go, Detroit said NO. If the Tigers are paying top dollar, they might as well wait through the season to make sure he's worth it. But I doubt Max will be a Tiger next season.

According to the Tigers:

"The Detroit Tigers have made a substantial, long-term contract extension offer to Max Scherzer that would have placed him among the highest-paid pitchers in baseball, and the offer was rejected," the team said in a statement."

I'd trade him before the deadline then. Get something for him, especially if he can duplicate last season's success.

Then after that paragraph:

"Boras, in a phone conversation with ESPN.com on Sunday, countered the Tigers' statement by saying that Scherzer did not reject the offer but instead it was the team that turned it down. He confirmed that talks will be tabled until after the season."

I think the Tigers put out an offer, then was countered by Boras/Scherzer. Detroit rejected the offer and more than likely are moving on. Boras is a master to make a team bid against themselves. Scherzer will roll the dice and hope he has a healthy Cy Young caliber season and be shopped to the highest bidder.

Even if they are trying to win it all? Hate to say it but they don't win a World Series this year without an ace like Scherzer, Verlander can't do it alone. They should just play out the year and give him a QO at the end of the season. That way they still get 'something' for him, albeit maybe not as good as a trade deadline prospect.

They made an offer. He countered with another offer. Both rejected the others' number...
