If you donate them to goodwill or another charity, then you can use the "Book Price" of common players @ .05ea and take the charitable contribution as a tax deduction ..... $250 per 5K count box ..... boom
Most card shops that are even willing to buy 80s and 90s commons usually pay $5 for a 5000 count box. Good luck on the 5 cents!

Is this actual legal to do? I have heard people state this, but have also been told many times this isn't the case as the book value is meaningless....
When you donate to goodwill you can only claim a certain dollar amount at the end of the year. Last time I checked it was around $500 to $750. That doesn't mean you get that amount back, you will get a certain percentage of the amount donated. I claim the max every year and I probably donate 10X that amount.
