Pretty good deal for both teams IMO.

Cespedes isn't over-paid but his price is too high for Oakland to justify unless the guy is putting up HUGE numbers.

They have NO shot at re-signing Lester, but they know that. And don't under-estimate the Gomes addition, particularly his PHing.

However, the Tigers thievery of Price probably makes all the A's moves a moot point anyway...

Oh wait. :(
I still think the A's are better from top to bottom. Either way it will be a GREAT series to watch this October!

Verlander is the most overrated pitcher in baseball. He had two years of ace, and everything else has been mediocre. Which years are the aberration? Lester and Gray are both better than Verlander. Kazmir has the best numbers of any of them this year. When did Samardjia pitch in the playoffs?

You musta missed the two Game 5s he threw at Oakland each of the last two years.

Betting against JV is something I wouldn't do. And you could argue that Sanchez, a guy most don't even mention, has been Detroit's best pitcher this year.

As an A's fan, I'll openly admit Detroit is the better team going in, but hopefully their biggest weakness, the bullpen, will come into play and the A's can take advantage. Not that the Oakland relievers are that great, but they've stabilized, especially at the back end...

You said you were a Rays fan in other threads..? I would take the A's ten times out of ten against the Tigers. I think they are a significantly better team.

And just look at JV's career stats. He is a CJ Wilson type pitcher, a number 2. He is certainly not bad, but fans and ESPN keep acting like he is on Kershaw (different level than anyone) and Felix's level but he isn't even that close.

How do you think the Sox beat them last year? It certainly wasn't by scoring 10 runs off of Max Scherzer, lol....

Rays? That wasn't me, I do usually root for the "little guys" and I think they got screwed Duke-lacrosse team style, but no. I root for Oakland. Got it from my Pop, who's rooted for them since they were in Philly.

I also root for the Phils and O's since they're both Local for me. And Arizona until they gave away J-UP.

Anyway, every since the "Bash Bros" left, and esepcially since MoneyBall, the A's have lacked that MegaStar you need to win in the Post-season, which Detroit has 2 of , at least. The A's are very good and they're close, but not quite good enough, and I don't think that has changed...

Has Kershaw or Hernandez won MVP and Cy Young in the same year?

I'm waiting to hear that argument....

Verlander has a 30% higher K/9 in 4 more games. And digging a little deeper per Fangraphs Lester's Postseason FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) is 3.59 while Verlanders, again in 4 more games, is 3.40. Also, Lester has only ever been in the top 10 of the Cy Young once, 4th in 2010. Verlander's been in the top 10 6 times including winning it in 2011 and finishing second in 2012. We are talking about the postseason and it's not definitive, I'm just saying there can be an argument to take Verlander over Lester.

Verlander had one single phenomenal year. That year he was far and away the best, but for his career just no.

He's had far more than one phenomenal year.So the other 5 years he was an All Star were a mirage?

Damn, Yoenis looked great in left field last night. Never got to show off his arm however, he was too busy running around like a chicken with his head cut off.

He has a career 3.51 ERA and only twice has he posted an ERA below 3.37. That is very good but far from consistently dominant as ESPN would lead you to believe

In his second start for Oakland he got his second win in a complete game shutout with 3 hits to drop his era this year to 2.44

He is 112 and 63 lifetime with a no hitter.

In WS he is 3 - 0 with a .43 era and 2 rings.
