Interesting take, but I'm curious how Gixen increases $ for ebay? I always thought sniping lowered final prices and therefore final fees for ebay. Forcing users to bid manually, leaves a lot more time for bidders to say "hmm, I was out bid. What's another $5?" And bid again. And so on and so on
I can see it your way as well. IMO I believe that when someone puts in a snipe, they put the absolute highest amount they'd pay and in some cases, a number which is so high that they believe it'll never be topped. Well we have all see certain auctions which end at stupid sale prices and we all go "Had to be snipe versus snipe situation" - meaning in a traditional setting might not had gone that far.

I can tell you for sure, I have had some auctions where I had a snipe so high and then it was beat and I was thrilled I didn't win it because the price he paid above my snipe was a rip off.

Who knows in the end. I think most people who manually input a bid aren't as aggressive, especially if it is live.

What playing field? It's a free service everyone has access too. If you are using eBay, you have internet and a computer, so you can type in gixen.com and do the same thing we're all doing.

All feelings aside, what a terrible move by eBay if they're blocking it. The only explanation is they're developing their own service and will offer that for a charge... which would be interesting and probably a smart move. At least for shareholders to maximize profit.

All-in-all, gixen actually helps increase the $ paid at closing for an item, so not sure why eBay would want to stop it otherwise.

Oh I know I can use it. That wasn't my point. I don't trust a proxy with my info(hell...I don't trust eBay all that much either) and I also don't trust it to fire the snipes correctly. But I have nothing against anyone using it.

My statement was a good portion of you rely heavily on it. I'm curious what would happen if you all had to manually snipe. What would those auctions ending at three in the morning look like then? Or would you just bid high to begin with and get bid up? I'm not trying to agitate anyone. I'm really honestly curious.

I try to be but I at least usually have the luxury of watching it live. I think a lot of people sniping do so because it might be hard for them to be checking the auctions all the time. They might be at work, out with the family, asleep...whatever. Luckily I'm up odd hours and work odd hours and have the ability to check quite often. If I get sniped with too much time left, I usually have the option to bid again. But I rarely do. As you said, if I'm outbid, at that point I'm done.

If I didn't use snipe, I'd probably base it on a case by case basis. I typically know how my day is going to shape up, so depending on the end time, I would either put in my high bid early, or set a calendar alert to remind me to bid live within the last 5, 10 seconds.

Even currently, I bid live even with my snipe set, just so I have two avenues to get my bid in. Never know (and this has happened) if the internet might crap out or if the snipe craps out. By setting a snipe and doing a live bid, I feel like my chances increase of having one work at least. And, worse comes to worse and I get busy/distracted, at least I know I have the snipe in.

The biggest thing is some of us are SO use to using gixen, that it's almost like we forgot how to even bid or build that into our day

Kinda my point. It's a good service to utilize. I'm just not trusting enough to use it I suppose. And it can be a pain in the rear to go manual. Oh well.

Athough I have never used a Snipe service I must say I bet it takes a lot of stress off. I always try to snipe cards in the last seconds by myself but I feel like my life is consumed for the last 30 minutes of an auction. Sometimes my wife gets pissed at me because she tries to ask me a question with like a minute left on an item.... and lets just say I "politely" tell her to stop talking.... LOL Bet I could have saved quite a few nights on the couch if I used a Snipe service. Just out of curiosoty, how much do these services cost? I would do some research but I figure you guys could save me the time.

I'm fairly certain people use snipe programs so they don't have to show interest in any item by placing an initial bid on anything. Being completely anonymous has huge advantages in auction bidding.

Gixen is free. There isn't even a sign up. You login to Gixen with your ebay username and password and set them up. You can pay for their "mirror service" which is like a backup in case things go down. I've only ever had like 3 snipes not go in (2 of them were in the last 2 days so till now just once) but any "once in a lifetime" items get the manual treatment. It's great for day to day stuff or at least it was depending on what the story is

+1 to this point.
I NEVER show my hand when i am interested in an item, except for the rare occurence when someone has a BIN (but more than I want to spend) that I feel someone may actually pull the trigger on. Only then will I put a bid in early to make sure the auction goes the distance

So is Gixen working okay? I have a snipe set for tomorrow night and wonder if I should log on and manually bid as well.

This thread took a tangent, but I did want to make one more comment. I used to bid to help avoid auction cancellations and definitely would bid in a somewhat attractive BIN was available (if i didn't BIN myself) and then you could also see who won if you didn't. Ebay is blocking all that now and i have had sellers cancel my bids and still end items early. You just never know anymore. I do know that i win less when i don't snipe. There are still plenty of bidders who just have to be #1 bidder all the time and those types of bidders are eliminated with a snipe bid. If snipe programs go away, I will go back to the old way, where i bd what to pay as last as I possibly can and if i can't be there for the auction, then I will just hope for the best.

After I set the proxy, my given has worked fine the last 2 days. I think it is something the individual user needs to address right now. Maybe this is a sign of the end coming, but it may just be something ebay did that caused a temporary glitch.

Uhmm...I do that manually when I choose so no, that's not the only reason they use it. They use it for convenience and to avoid issues much like mrdallas described above.

I had no idea Wade Boggs had become so uncollectable (?) - or, perhaps only Boggs in a Rays uni - but I was able to pickup x3 '99 Ultimate Parallel 100 (/100), x2 '99 SPx Finite Radiance (/100) and x1 '99 Flair Legacy Row 2 (/99) for $20 dlvd.

I was skeptical until they arrived today but they did. If anyone's interested there are more Boggs out there from the seller including another Ultimate Parallel 100. Buyer beware: they were crammed 3 cards per card saver (without sleeves?!) in a PWE. Arrived safely nonetheless.
