I am a retired Correction Officer. I did 20 years in prison and I didn't kill anyone.

The US penal code obviously can be (and is) debated at great length. For example, one could argue that drug charges carry too much prison time as compared to other crimes. However, this seems pretty black and white; the guy killed his girlfriend by shooting her repeatedly claiming he thought she was an intruder and gets 5 years which is absolutely ridiculous. I hope he really, really gets what he deserves in jail.

If you thought there was an intruder in the bathroom wouldn't your first reaction be to at least yell whose there? If you do that you'll easily be able to recognize your girlfriend's voice. Or would your first reaction be to go grab your gun and empty your gun through the wall? It's not rocket science the story is total ********, his trial wasn't even decide by a jury and he bought a team of incredible lawyers lol otherwise he'd be in jail for life

There are just so many ways to at least confirm if you know the person whose in the bathroom, he could have gone and grabbed his gun and then at least warned the person in the bathroom or threatened to shoot. This would be a classic, best case scenario first-degree manslaughter in the US.
