The Mets would be stupid to retaliate anytime soon.

Save it for later. Too much to lose by reacting quickly.

Didn't Barry Zito bean a guy in Spring Training for something that happened in the previous postseason?

They damn well better respond, don't want another 2000 roided up Clemens throwing a bat at Piazza and no retaliation and then the Mets just rolled over. This better light a fire under their @$$3$

Whoa whoa whoa bro, no Yankee talk

Am I kidding? Nope I hate the dodgers and that play was so dodgers
AC, by all accounts you're a pretty good dude. You're usually pretty rational. But posts like this piss me off. How is this "so Dodgers"? What past behavior has mirrored what Utley did?

This is like saying that all Dodgers fans should be painted with a "Criminal Brush" because of the actions of the two thugs that attacked Brian Stow, or that all Phillies fans should be stereotyped by the ******** that threw D-cell batteries at JD Drew.

I'm HOPING the Mets drop the hammer on someone for the Dodgers. ****ing bush league at it's worst.
And if this happens, and if there's a clear intent to injure, then I hope MLB drops the hammer HARD on whoever does the retaliating. Hit a guy in the ass if you must, but any headhunting or spikes up slide should be dealt with harshly.

Look, if anyone thinks Utley went in with any other intention than breaking up a double play, then that person is delusional. There's no malice there. Was the slide late? Absolutely. Was it dirty? Yes, I think it was. Is Tejada's injury unfortunate? Absolutely. I get that the Mets are upset. If it were Seager laying there with a broken leg, I would be, too. However, emotions need to cool down more just a bit. There are too many folks wishing bodily harm to come to Utley or another Dodger player as a result of the slide. Heck, you can probably bet the house that Utley has received the obligatory death threats - that kind of thing is never cool.

edit: yep.

Slide?there was no slide. Tomorow is a pivotal game. That play just jumped the intensity level here by ten. Not wishing anyone harm, I believe in karma.

My thoughts on the subject
1. Mlb better change the rules on these takedowns at 2b. Tejada was in a vulnerable position and had no chance. 2. They should have upheld the out call since utley never touched 2b. I have seen much worst "neighborhood" calls upheld.
3. What Utley did was dirty but within the current rules they enforce.

I'm not in favor of MLB changing any rules.

Okay, change the rules where the base runner can't slide into the defender to break up the double play. You'll just have base runners standing straight up with their helmet down trying to block the throw to first base.

So pick your poison.

The defender already has a bullsh*t unwritten 'neighborhood' rule in place to protect them. They literally do not even have to touch the base to get an out. If that's not BS, I don't know what is.

Don't overreact and start changing rules. It's unfortunate that Tejada's leg got broken, but everyone needs to take a step back and calm down.

Sliding past the base on purpose, outside the baseline, or spikes up = not ok

Neighborhood rule = not ok

Well, when the defender gets to break the rules and it's acceptable, which WAS the case here because Tejada didn't touch the base, then the base runner should be allowed to do the exact same thing. The defender doesn't have to play within the rules, so why should the base runner?

Take him out every time if you can. Everyone does it.

I stated that I didn't think it was ok for "ghost outs" , I agree with you. I feel the defense needs to touch the bag and I feel the runner needs to slide appropriately.

I know what you meant. I wasn't trying to be argumentative with you.

I just think that until MLB changes the neighborhood play, that in this instance, two wrongs do make a right. One player can't get away with BS and it's acceptable, and the other player get crucified for doing the exact same thing.

Utley has put his own SS and 2B in danger and you can bet the Mets will be licking their chops to take someone out on a slide. No doubt, spikes will be up. Interesting question for Mattingly, do you dare put Utley in the field where he has to turn a DP? Do you dare bat him in a situation where the Mets can afford to hit him (for example, 2 outs nobody on)?

Utley suspended for games 3 and 4, so there you go. I hope this doesn't result in another Dodger player being targeted. Save that for the next time Utley is in uniform, be it game 5 or sometime next season.

Utley suspended for games 3 and 4,

and that upsets me because there is no suspension or replacement of the 9 blind mice that let it happen. If the slide was really that rulebook illegal, how come none of the 9 blind mice called it live (or even after replay) or even awarded Utley second base safely on replay if the play was illegal? I guess all 9 were not doing their job watching Dodgers/Mets NLDS Game 2 but rather watching **** on their smartphones at the stadium or on the monitors in NYC.

There are 3 rules already on the books that Utley broke.

He and the hitter should have been called out under the CURRENT rules.
