This spring, the Marlins' biggest question about top prospect Tyler Kolek was where he would start the season. Now it's changed to when he will pitch again.
According to MLB.com, Kolek's right elbow will be examined by team doctors Monday. The second overall pick of the 2014 Draft hurt his arm Friday and has suffered discomfort since then. It's unknown whether the 20-year-old will need surgery.
Miami had been mulling over whether to start Kolek off at Class A Advanced Jupiter or Class A Greensboro. The hard-throwing righty made 25 starts for the Grasshoppers in 2015, posting a 4-10 record with a 4.56 ERA.
Kolek's fastball has been clocked at 102 mph, but the Shepherd, Texas native has had trouble developing his off-speed stuff in his young professional career.
Since being drafted between Brady Aiken (chosen by the Astros, but later signed by the Indians) and Carlos Rodon of the White Sox, Kolek has made 34 appearances in the Minor Leagues. Over 130 2/3 innings, Kolek has struck out 99 and walked 74.
