Ripken has to the rarest

I believe the Griffey is a printing error more so than a color variation. The blue ink was just washed out with amine or water during the printing process giving the color difference. during the next pass on the press, the original color was probably restored.

I don't have any pics handy right now, but 88 Topps Cloth and 89 Topps Gold samples/promos are tough. 89 Donruss Blue Leaf (the name escapes me, but it's something like that). 88 Double Headers test, 89 Topps Heads up.

You're thinking of the Blue Chips. If not for a terrible player selection, those would be far better known and cared about. Might be the rarest Franklin Stubbs card, but it's still a Franklin Stubbs card.

Yeah, I meant to actually list those in my first post. Although not truly hard to find w the open market place you can prob add the 89 UD Sample Variations and RN Murphy to a semi hard to find list. What about some boxed set variations like / Boardwalk Baseball.

I think as more and more collectors from this era jump back into the hobby these cards will become increasingly harder to afford. The gems of the 80's and, in general from the junk wax era, will standout from the massive overproduction of that period. Also, there was a lot less product choices out there as compared to modern cards being produced in the 2000's (i.e. Ichiro has like 50 different RC cards from 2001).

No, those are 1990. DBacon got it right, Blue Chips. They were designed like the Grand Slammers. There are Donruss and Leaf versions as well as color variations I believe.

I'll share some not so widely known and/or collected items from the 80s. Specialty collectors probably have their own list of tough regional, oddball issues that never or rarely seem to come up for sale. I'll start it off with one that may be THE hardest item to find...1981 Gafline Garvey. I just listed one for sale at an extremely high price just to test the waters. Lots of watchers, but nobody bit. It is now back in the collection. Although technically not a card, it is cataloged as such. Same goes of the 1982 Montreal News "cards", 1986 Wallich Enterprises postcard and the 1980-81 Long Beach Press Telegram Dodgers/Angels newspaper cards.

Also tough are 1986 Inside Baseball/Allred & 1981-82 FBI discs.
