I don't know if I find many of the extreme player specific lists sad or inspiring. Maybe a little of both. I know it keeps most of you engaged and a spark of hope alive that you'll find one or more of these white whales. I was once right in the middle, tracking the most obscure of the obscure on a want list, hoping to come across them. My personal experience eventually more often lead to the discovery of cool items that I had never known about before and the realization that some/most of the "cataloged" cards I had chased for many years clearly didn't even exist. Furthermore, some of the real scarce items, if/when they popped up, were almost always outside of my price range and sour disappointment overcame me when I was defeated or just was not able to cough up the $ being asked. Prime example, the 1980 Topps test coin, a top 5 fantasy wish list item for ever, was offered to me for $1500. I know they are scarce, but not a chance I am spending that much on any Steve Garvey item, ever! Then we have to address the EXPLOSION of low serial numbered/parallels that have obliterated most average collectors want lists.

Here is a generic example you see quite often today, "I have 91.6% of player X, minus the 1/1s. With those included, I have 42.8% of all cards printed"! That is probably an extreme exaggeration on the percentages, but its not too far off reality. There are few, if any, collectors that have the time, patience, resources and luck to be able to continually track 1/1s and even anything less than 10 copies. This phenomenon and the ridiculous extremes it has come to has ruined collecting for the average person in my opinion. Yes, you can always just chase what you can afford, but some of the fun dies when you know you are priced out of half the stuff out there. i still collect Steve Garvey, but I have lost much of the passion that used to drive me to find it all. I can't have it all and that still bothered me until i finally just accepted it and now that I don't chase every item, I don't have the fire for what I do chase the way I used to.

Happy collecting and best of luck to you all, whatever and however you collect.

Definitely agree with several points by @mrmopar . The hype/rich guy effect has really become visible the last 2 years. Not losing sleep, but some cards are just stupid money that cannot be justified. I have definitely made adjustments to what I care about finding and I have had flippers try to fleece me with ridiculous asks on rare clemens stuff like that Garvey coin. Also, I ve set an endpoint. Clemens had 4672 Ks..... I am stopping at 4672 cards. Almost at 4k now. I will NOT use 2007 and 08 Moments and Mikestones to cheat. I have less than 100 of those. Unless jersey matches, I will avoid them.

things I'd like to get below...but I am NOT paying current hype prices on. If its a fair deal, I ll grab it, but I ll never view Clemens stuff as an "investment". Its just a collection of things I like. Side note that I believe supports that point, its funny, Cardboard Legends has been trying for nearly 20 years to unload all of Dov's massive, peak at the time, Rocket collection. He is still not done, because the demand isn't there. A lot sold, but he still has plenty he can't move after being advertised for 20 years.

anyway, here's 10 I am still seeking

A Red Sox Uniformed 1/1 Superfractor auto>NOT YET
1997 Fractal Materials >LEATHER/20. NOT YET
2002 Topps Chrome Black Refractor >NOT YET
2006 SP by the Letter O, C and K NOT YET
A Dynasty Red Sox Patch auto NOT YET
1996 Select Morror Red NOT YET (yep, I know there's one for sale for 500. Its a 100 dollar card, max, as the last Blues sold just under 200 each in 2025. The current ebay red seller is crazy.)
2001 Home Openers Home Run NOT YET
1996 Leaf Century Marks auto/100, NOT YET (there are two available locally near RI, but stratosphere priced for a Clemens auto)
1998 teks (most) NOT YET
1998 tek pre prods (NOT YET)

The 1997 Donruss Elite Gold Stars Gold Logo #70? It's the rare corrected version of the 1997 Donruss Elite Gold Stars with a gold Donruss Elite logo. Most of the ones out there are the error with a silver Donruss Elite logo.

Do you know if all players have that? I will have to check for a Puckett.

Finally found a 2009 Sega Card Gen Albert Pujols produced by Upper Deck while looking for a foil version. I was not aware of a base version. Topps started producing them in 2010.
