Error Cards & Beckett

How does Beckett decide what gets listed and what doesn't when it comes to error cards?

Great questions; popularity seems to be the best answer.

They generally list a card based on sales, popularity and/ or availability.

So while a frank thomas "nnof" may not surface for sale often, when it does it sells very high.

Although the billy ripken ff & randy johnson marlboro from the 89 fleer set aren't considered errors, they fall into the category.

They surface often & don't sell for a ton BUT are popular & generally always have a buyer, especially the ripken.

If an error card has only a few known examples, like the other "blackless" cards from 90 topps, they won't be listed due to extreme lack of sales (if any at all).

Lastly, if a card has a "one of a kind" defect, such as missing an auto or blank back or missing foil , it won't be listed because its not "excepted" by the hobby & probably only is on one card.

I don't think sales is ever a factor simply because a lot of cards that are very rare or don't even exist has a book value. I think it's all based on popularity and hobby acceptance.

I agree. I have a 1992-93 skybox Adam Keefe rc with no skybox logo. Doesn't list as an error.

These are some of the errors I have saved over the years. I think most are probably legit error cards but a few might be questionable.

There are certain ones from that list I am trying to get Beckett to acknowledge in their online guide.

The few cards I wanted to try to get listed in Beckett are the red refractors missing the serial numbers. I have confirmed with Topps that these are errors but am having a hard time getting Beckett to acknowledge them. I included the Topps email where they say they are indeed error cards and where they state pretty emphatically there will be no refunds or replacements for them.

I wanted to ask about the following cards and what happened with them and
what exactly they are.

These seem to be the red refractor versions but are not serial numbered.

The other cards I wanted Beckett to acknowledge are the 2012 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs #BCP102 Oscar Taveras (No Autograph) cards.

These seem to be coming from the jumbo packs and I would think be considered errors because there are corrected versions and uncorrected versions.

I was lucky and was able to get about ten of them and have seen at least that many more that I wasn't able to get.

He seems like a pretty hot player and the problem is not limited to just one or two cards so it seems like all the qualifiers to be an error are there.

The chrome/finest/sticker cards missing autos can be wipped off by anyone, therefore making your own error card. Those will never be acknowledged in beckett.

Cards missing serial numbers, especially fleer products or "rare color" refractors are likely backdoored or came out via the fleer bankruptcy liquidation.

Theres been a rash of non numbered "rare colored" refractors hitting the market the last few years, either stolen out of the plant or given away by topps.

Been discussed numerous times on fcb.

I was told by BGS it is impossible to remove an autograph from a card no matter what the surface is without leaving some sort of trace or damage and cards like that would not be graded.

I have seen people say over and over again how easy it is to do it yet have not seen anyone prove it yet.

Rich Klein, who used to be Beckett's error guru, is a member of this board.
He was one of Beckett's best people for about 20 years and worked for them back when the magazine was respectable, before the internet.
His FCB name is sabrgeek.

Just read 10 pages of that thread lol is all I can say...

BGS will say what they need to. They have to appear a certain way. They say error as a generic answer to your missing serial numbers. Could be backdoored. They don't know. Maybe they would only check the surface if it was missing the whole auto, but it's not Standard Operating Prodedure to check for chemical residue or ink removal surface damage on all cards, if even possible ( or should I say within their means). Errant ink line removal, ink smudges removed and shortened tail from going off card and it was not detected. Try it.

Those were not given out as cards, but cut from uncut sheets. A few uncut sheets were sold through Huggins and Scott auctions. How the owner got them, who knows. I bought a few cards from eBay and did some research on the seller. Turns out he worked for some of the card companies and most of them know who that person is. But it always get swept under the rug eventually as long as card companies ignore it.

My first thought upon seeing this is why is fcb getting all the banned bo members (spewing their crap here.

Then I was slightly impressed that the word superfractor wasn't used in regards to the non 1/1 arod card. Maybe said member actually listened and is trying to have a legitimate conversation.

Then I see no. This will still be the same massive thread where all logic and proof about how easy it is to create a no auto "error" card is ignored because Beckett said so once.

Ugh if I want to see fighting and garbage info I would go over there. I hope that this thread gets nipped early.

The reason no autograph / no serial number cards will never be recognized as error cards is because of all of the "backdoored" uncut sheets that hit the secondary market. And since they all are not pack pulled, it's impossible to know where each came from.
