[quote="Liberate Baltimore":1hg7e4zc]In my current job, I've handled probably 30-40 1952 Topps #311 Mantle cards. I will completely divulge that I think it's an overrated card, but understand why people like it.

Your a Grader? Why do you think it's overrated?

Hello there,

I actually make my living in the auction industry. I am currently the Head Writer for Huggins & Scott Auctions in Silver Spring, Maryland. Reasons I think the card is overrated.

1.) It is NOT a rookie card. Just because some hobby magazine or grading company or anyone else perpetuates a mis-truth does not make it so. The #311 Mantle high number was released almost 16 months after Mantle's major league debut. The 1951 Bowman, 1952 Berk Ross and even the 1952 Bowman were released to the public earlier.

2.) Although 1952 Topps high numbers are relatively tough, there is still plenty of them to go around. Added to the fact that Mantle was a double print in the high series.

3.) As a previous poster alluded to, this card is drilled into hobbyists as one of the most important cards ever. Says who? Mickey Mantle fans? Yankees fans? The same notion is drilled into us about the T206 Wagner.....and that is not even Wagner's toughest tobacco card!

Those are my main reasons. However, I think the hobby's love of the 1952 Topps set, the ill-conceived notion that it's Mantle's rookie card (sorry, neither is the 1986-87 Fleer Jordan) and the New York ardor for Mantle has fueled this.

could not agree more.
i mean there have been plenty of players better than mantle
have vintage rookies from the 50's, i too wonder why it became
so important in this hobby. it certainly cannot be because some got
dumped in the ocean.

'52 Mantles are nice cards, no doubt, and I'm sure that there are more represented on the boards than just George's. As collectors, it is sort of drilled into us that "this is the one you want" regarding that card. I don't have one, but I certainly could have afforded one based on how much I spent on the cards in my collection. I get more enjoyment out of the cards I already own than I would a '52 Mantle. Not saying I wouldn't like to own one one day, but for now, it's not my "holy grail."

I agree 100% with this post above, even when I collected Topps cards....

It wouldnt be anywhere near the top of my list now, even if it was a $1000 card....
Negs ......too common for the $$, double printed, overrated underachieving player, nonrookie, etc.
Plus...... attractive

Well let's be fair and say that the '52 Mantle is definitely the most eye friendly of his cards! Just like the Fleer Jordan Rookie is WAY nicer looking than the '84 Star! I think that has alot to do with standard collectors perception..

I have kept my PC in the bank for a few years now, Never know what can happen and when. It would be nice to have the 52 Mantle, But I will stick with my 51 Bowman.

These are your opinions. In terms of "most eye friendly", I like the 1951 Bowman, 1952 Bowman, 1955 Bowman and 1956 Topps over the 1952 Topps.

Among the many reasons I'm glad I'm not a Yankees fan is that I'll never 'have' to own one. I'd love to have a copy of #312, though - last 'big' card I need for my Dodger set.

Yes, a poor copy is locked away at the bank.
You know I never understood why people lock away valuable cards in a bank?

For the same reason most sane people don't leave $5000 cash laying around their house
wow get a life dude... Your like obsessed with me.. Pretty pathetic seriously.

Get over yourself. I didn't even check to see who I was quoting. I just responded to a question.

I've gotten the key pre-war I've wanted out of the way and am looking at some 50s cards. The '52 Topps is one of those cards that I like but don't care one second about not having it and I don't think I'll ever chase it down either. I'm thinking the '56 is definitely the one I want but I think my favorite Mantle vintage is probably the '54 Dan Dee.

I bought the Mantle because I had always wanted one. I ended up selling some modern stuff to justify spending the money on it and I couldn't be happier about the decision. The fact is that the Mantle has appreciate in value over that time and those modern cards aren't worth half of what I sold them for. The other thing about having the Mantle is that I have decided to put together a graded 52 set that I am about 30% finished with. I know it's not everyone's thing but I really get much more enjoyment from Vintage.

Mantle was my first baseball hero as a kid, so I'd always wanted this card but thought I'd never be able to afford one. Like all cards in my safe deposit box, I also have a nice copy made on good paper stock at a copy center so I can at least admire that whenever I want. I can also go to my Photobucket to peek too.

Like many others have stated before in previous threads, I would much rather have a Mantle RC (1951 Bowman) than the 1952 Topps. And I'll save a lot of money too.

Absolutely. The card is iconic. The whole set is iconic. The '51 Bowman set is beautiful but is no '52 Topps by any means. The '52 Mantle is one of the major reasons we are all here today as collectors.

There's just something about rookie cards that appeals to me more than any second year card could, even the 52 Mantle. In previous threads here and on BMB, I was always surprised to find that there are many others like me that would rather have the RC. Granted, most people would rather have the 52 Topps, but there are a large number of folks that prefer the 51 Bowman.

I think the demand for that card is something that drives the price of it, especially in a high grade condition. I am sure there are plenty of legitimate lower grade ones, but the PSA 7 or higher must be quite the price these days.

For the record, I have always personally considered the 1951 Bowman His True Rookie Card. It is a mainstream set, so for me that is the RC, not the 52 Topps.

I completely agree on the Jordan. I used to see the Star sets for sale all the time in the mid-80's, they were not that tough to find. I wish I would have known that Beckett would decide to annoint the 86-87 fleer his rc or I wouldn't have given away 2 of them to my brother's college roommates in '87. Nobody considered that Jordan's rc in 86-88.
