Those are sweet Talmer.
I was just thinking last night I had not seen an update for awhile and figured I had just missed it, so I searched for this thread and saw no updates since June, and then BAM this morning an update. I wondered if you made it down to the National and found any.

At the National I was able to meet Bill Corcoran who is a pretty "famous" signed card dealer. I asked him if he had any 1954 Bowman and he said not with him but at his home he was sure he did. He asked who I needed, I gave him my list and he said most are very tough(I knew this) but he thought he might have a couple I needed. Well Monday morning he e-mails me to tell me he has Bill Bruton and Dale Mitchell. I didn't really care what price he wanted for them I was buying them after not getting much at the National. For $150 I was able to knock 2 of 9 off my list and was very pleased with his service and the condition of the cards.

Those are indeed in nice condition. Best of luck on the final 7!

Thanks for all the comments guys. Updates are few and far between now since it might take me years to finish the set. I have located 2 Campanellas and 1 Billy Martin the hard part is getting their owners to part with them.

E they are both deceased Bruton passed in 1995 and Dale Mitchell passed in 1987.

That's the plan. They are all eventually gonna be PSA/DNA. Too bad it will run me around 3k to slab the ones that aren't PSA already.

Are you going to send them all at once?

I can't afford to. Especially since I just bought a house last month. Whenever they have a red flip special I will submit a larger amount.

Re: 1954 Bowman Signed Set Thread *Updated 10/5* 97.3%!! Done

I am very please to show off number 219 in my set Vern Bickford. I have had this card for a few weeks now as I bought it as a gift to myself for my 25th birthday. Whenever asked who are the toughest cards in the set I would of course include Ted Williams but Vern Bickford was always the TOUGHEST and probably the #1 most wanted card for any of my collections. Bickford was the first player dead in the set he passed away of cancer in 1960 leaving only 6 years for this card to be signed, I figured I would have to pay $700+ on this card. I saw it pop up on ebay encased in what looked to be a PSA case so I messaged the seller asking him to end the auction early, afterwards I realized this card was encased by some no name grading company with slabs made to mimmick the PSA blue flip slabs. I then did a PSA/DNA quick opinion on the autograph and it passed so for $225 I now have my most wanted card and the absolute toughest card in this set and gives me hope that one day it will be completed.

HOLY CRAP!

How many of these do you think are out there in the first place?
Given that he died of cancer in 1960, im guessing he was ill before
succumbing to the disease, meaning that he wasnt signing any
baseball cards in 1959 or early 1960 while he was fighting for
his life.

E, I would have to say that no more then a handful of signed 54 Bickfords are in existance 50 years after his passing. In my 3 1/2 years building this set I have never seen another and after talking to some of the most well known autograph dealers in the business I pretty much was told good luck with finding one. Now on to the next impossibility in the set Hal Rice.

I'm happy to see this fantastic thread pop up again. Congrats on landing the Bickford. I'm amazed you've actually gotten this quest down to just six cards. Can't wait to see your next one.

Hal passed in 1997 so you would think he wouldn't be that tough but he was a tough autograph when he was able to sign then in the late 80's had a stroke that left him unable to sign for well over a decade before he passed away.
