For some reason, there has been a recent spike in the prices of this card in a PSA 10 slab. As evidenced by my signature, this is a card I follow and check daily. The last two sales have gone for $361 and $393 (both 7 day auctions), whereas this card has typically sold in the $250 range.

From the same set, as a comparison:

The last three Kirby Puckett PSA 10s have sold for $375, $375, and $416. This has been a typical price over the last few years.

The last two Roger Clemens PSA 10s have sold for $430 and $377. This card has fallen from the $1000-1200 range three years ago.

factory sets = more PSA 10

Pack inserted = More PSA 8

It was 1984. . . condition wasn't quite as important as there were no grading companies and the majority of those in the hobby collecting modern stuff were under 18.

The OP made a point that there was a price spike in PSA 10s for this card. Your point counters the OP's.

Not sure what your point is, actually.

The 1984 Fleer set was not a absolute mint out of box set like modern stuff obviously, and MANY were opened at the time as well. PSA 10's may not be extremely rare but are by no means common. Getting any 1984 Fleer card to grade a 10 is a very good grade due to notorious off centering as well as rough/furry edges. I am not entirely shocked to see this spike and as a fellow Gooden collector, I always thought that the day would come that his card stock would see a rise due to the impact he once had on the sport/hobby and those who grew up in the 80's wanting to get a piece of what was once outlandishly priced and all but un-obtainable as kids.

I chuckled.

And to top it off, the irony is that the Gooden card "books" significantly lower than both the Puckett and the Clemens, and yet the PSA 10 is roughly the same or a bit higher.

OK. Maybe not so much irony.

I thought Doc card would have a lot more 10's and submissions. Of the big 3
Gooden only 42 PSA 10's exist out of 486 total graded
Rocket 247 graded 10's out of 3728
Puck 231 graded 10's out of 2463 total graded....

I wonder if Gooden is pretty tough to find in decent enough shape raw to even bother sending in to grade. Easily see the prices being high on the PSA 10 copies. Plus you have the registry and Gooden does have a player one there.

If memory serves me correctly, the Gooden is tough to find centered.

And for the poster who commented on the number of PSA 10s for the three cards - the number isn't very high, actually.

What's more surprising is that only 486 total Goodens were graded as compared to Puckett and Clemens.

The 132 card Update factory sets have always, even since the initial release, have been condition sensitive. Corners and centering plagued this product.

Cards from boxed sets are a lot worse off condition-wise than cards from packs
