Cards from boxed sets are a lot worse off condition-wise than cards from packs

In general ? or specifically this set?

In general, and I'm only talking about boxed Traded/Update sets (not Factory sets)

The boxes had rounded corners (where they were folded), causing a ton of soft corners

I did not know this

I was under the impression it was like vending boxes or factory sets and that the cards were generally well protected.

The biggest problem with Gooden is that he was the most popular card when the sets came out, so they were handled a lot more back then, long before grading when "MINT" meant something quite different than it does today. The boxes that housed these sets were flimsy and dinged corners were common on cards pulled from the set for the first time. Clemens and Puckett became key cards much later, and were more likely to be in better condition.

However, none of this explains why the Gooden card is garnering such large sums of late.

Maybe TBP or GC knows, but is Gooden player registry set a new add on at PSA. Could be PSA collectors looking to start his player set. Also with only 42 PSA 10's of the card and probably a lot of those locked away. Price may continue to go up with Registry competition for Docs rare high grade cards. Doc has kinda gotten a rebirth in popularity as well it seems.

In the 15+ years that I have collected Gooden I have only seen 2 or 3 PSA 10's come up for sale however I have not actively searched them out on eBay for the last couple years so....

i believe the Gooden Registry has been around for some time. i started my set last year, but do not go after them with that much vigor.

Here is my stereotypical o/c Gooden FU. i picked this up when i returned to the hobby back in 2005

The 84 FUs are pretty hard to find centered, especially when looking at PSA 9s

took me quite a while to track these down:

Nice Doc in PSA 9 tbp. Do the 9's get decent coin. Not many of those either. Probably a big premium on better centered 9's.

Update on the prices of the Fleer Update Gooden PSA 10: The prices have come back down to earth. The last two have sold for $275 (BEST OFFER on a card listed for $450) and $202.50 (7 day auction).

Interestingly, this raw copy sold for $7 recently, and I am reasonably sure it is counterfeit (it was heavily counterfeited back in the day):

The 132 card Update factory sets have always, even since the initial release, have been condition sensitive. Corners and centering plagued this product.

As someone who purchased 10 sets of this product for 9.99 each back in 1984 I remember this set well. I wasnt able to purchase any more as these sets were held in much more limited supply that the Topps update sets from the same year (or so they told us)

Fleer promoted this update set as one they took great care in producing yet many cards were issued off center. At the time many didnt care about them being slightly off center and as long as they were not far off to one side or the other, collectors generally didnt care. Many of these cards in the set are found off center including the big ones because there were 132 cards in the set which is exactly how many are on a sheet of printed cards. Fleer printed one sheet for each set and if some of the cards were off center in the set, logic tells us that all of the cards will be off for that set.

So finding anything dead center will be a bit tougher but if you find a complete set that has the commons centered nicely, its only logical that the stars will also be nicely centered.
