I've been visiting family for the holidays. On every trip home, I dig through the huge pile of late 80s, early 90s junk from when I was a kid and bring back a few more decent cards of stars. The stuff is pretty picked over now with not much left and I decided that after this round, I'd give everything else away.

With a little help, I found the junk wax gems website (shameless plug). Usually I dread going through '91 Topps because it's boring and I have a TON of it. I've skipped that box before, but this time, with new targets in hand, I was ready. I actually had a blast sorting the stuff, scouring for the various errors and variations, and pulling out some stuff I never knew existed. I don't think I've got any of the big ones, but I've got several different mistakes and corrected versions. With one card, I actually had all 3 variations. It was fun comparing the different versions.

I know, I know, this whole thread is kind of a "cool story bro," but I had a great time and wanted to share. It brought back a little of the magic those cards held when I was a kid. Anyone else ever done this? Rediscovering something from their card collecting past.

So what were some of the cards you found? Post them up. I love 80's and 90's junk. ;)

I'll try to get a list with some scans up later. The kids are with the inlaws so my wife and I can have a couple days without them that we never get. So I don't have the stuff with me. The junk wax gems site was a real help. Ive got one with a dude that had bad acne and then a corrected version with an airbrushed clean complexion  .

So you and the wife are kid-less and your playing with your 80-90 wax. Man you really are a geek

My Ellis Burks collection is a direct result of this. On a trip to my parents' house, our 3 year old daughter discovered my old Burks collection (42 unique cards at that time, now I'm at 363.)

Don't apologize. This kind of thread is exactly what this site needs more of.
Nostalgia, collecting for fun, actually looking at your cards... it's what this hobby is lacking these days.
I love going back through my boxes of late '80s-early '90s cards when I visit my parents.
In fact, I just spent hours doing it the other day and always find cool cards that I take back with me.
Great post.

I actually have had similar enjoyment going through 1990 pro set football boxes that I picked up for my 5 year old to bust at card shows.

1982 Topps football is next on my "Good ol' days" list.

They were the first licensed set in a while and actually had Some, not many, Action shots...

And Congrats on the '91 finds!

Did the same thing with 1991 Topps after seeing the checklist on junkwaxgems site.

Found some rare A*B* back variations and the Randy Bush no print code I found sold for $17.50 on EBay.

Had fun.

Yep, went digging too.
I even opened up a bunch of raks and super raks looking for errors.

I've always loved this stuff
