30 minutes and counting.

I almost wish more 1st rounders hadn't signed until now, as it's an absolute trip to get a flurry of news flashes letting us know the fate of several players' futures, all at once. Only 3 people to report on this year.

Happy to be the newest member of the Baltimore Orioles organization!!! Living my dream!! ‪#GoBirds‬!

So, there it is. 30 out of 31 ain't bad. Of course, the one unsigned guy turned out to be the consensus top pitcher in the draft....

Well, I don't think many(if any) had Appel as the top talent, a lot had him as the guy that would be taken #1 though. Seems kinda risky for Appel.

The OP has been updated for the final time to include Gausman, Giolito, and why Appel didn't sign.

BTW, Gausman's bonus was $4.32M.

From Dejan Kovacevic's blog -

Now that it's clear the Pirates did not sign Mark Appel, I'll share with you that the only way Scott Boras was going to agree is if the team had gone above and beyond and paid those penalties -- next year's first-rounder, cash, etc. -- to get his client somewhere in the range of $6 million. As you can see, the Pirates didn't do that. Boras' thought process is that, as he told me, "Talent will always find a way," so he sees more options for Appel than some of us do. We'll see.

Boras is horses ass for thinking that any team would of done that. He most likely had 5M from the Astros and turned it down and caused his client to fall down to the Pirates. Instead of admitting he was wrong he just cost his client again. Hope Appel has a good season and doesn't end up in independent ball trying to get back that 5M offer the rest of his life.

Boras is now saying he might sue MLB for this new draft system, NH of the Pirates stated they offered every dollar until the second penalty phase (loss of 1st round DP) to Appel.

Does anyone know if it was really the money that Appel didn't sign? B/c if that's the case, Boras handled this all wrong and I can't believe Appel would be that "motivated" to go back to school. That guy could've had almost $4 million. What if he goes back and has an arm injury? He might not even be drafted in the top 20 rounds next year.

Ironically, I just asked that very question to John Manuel and Jim Callis, who will be doing a podcast about today's deadline shortly. Hopefully they'll answer it during the recording.

Appel is also going back to get a degree from Stanford. That's slightly different than going back to Tennessee like hocheaver did. That gives a bit more leverage to him. He stands to gain a lot by going back to school--a lot more than most college draftees do.

Im just glad the Pirates didn't use that extra money to sign Walker Buehler. That kid will be a hoss for the Commodores. We also kept Rhett the Jet Wiseman.

Boras is an ass and good for the Pirates! Wasn't too high on Appel and I think he was PO'd that he dropped to #8 in the draft...His asking price was out of line for the #8 pick...

Oh how could I? Future is verrrry bright. Kinda wondering why he fell down the draft boards, after being so well regarded earlier.

Whats your interest in him, if you don't mind me asking?
