Does anyone know if it was really the money that Appel didn't sign? B/c if that's the case, Boras handled this all wrong and I can't believe Appel would be that "motivated" to go back to school. That guy could've had almost $4 million. What if he goes back and has an arm injury? He might not even be drafted in the top 20 rounds next year.

Ironically, I just asked that very question to John Manuel and Jim Callis, who will be doing a podcast about today's deadline shortly. Hopefully they'll answer it during the recording.

Callis did in fact answer my question in the podcast (around the 46:00 mark). He believes the issue was monetary only in nature, and that if there was another reason he didn't sign, it would be a surprise.

Oh how could I? Future is verrrry bright. Kinda wondering why he fell down the draft boards, after being so well regarded earlier.

Whats your interest in him, if you don't mind me asking?

I think his asking price was high and talks just broke off last week when it became apparent he wasn't budging from his price. Same build as Sonny Gray, but throws harder already. I think he'll definitely be a guy that will help in some capacity for Vanderbilt next year.

Appel is also going back to get a degree from Stanford. That's slightly different than going back to Tennessee like hocheaver did. That gives a bit more leverage to him. He stands to gain a lot by going back to school--a lot more than most college draftees do.

Im just glad the Pirates didn't use that extra money to sign Walker Buehler. That kid will be a hoss for the Commodores. We also kept Rhett the Jet Wiseman.

Pirates used almost every bit of their "extra" money to sign other picks, nothing was left for Buehler

“Our final offer exceeded the available bonus pool money and was essentially up to the last dollar we could offer prior to falling into the second tier penalty which would have resulted in the loss of a first round draft selection,"
Huntington said.
"While, as we have shown in past years, we are willing to be aggressive with our financial offer, we simply did not feel it was in the best interest of the organization to forfeit our first round selection in the 2013 amateur draft."

Ah yes, the new CBA is great!

I know I'm late on Appel but...

does Matt Harrington ring a bell?
