Rays sign draft choice O'Conner
St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays have signed Justin O'Conner, the 31st overall selection in the 2010 First Year Player Draft.
The Rays were awarded the choice as compensation for not being able to sign LeVon Washington, who was their number one pick, 30th overall, in 2009.
O'Conner batted .470 with eight home runs and 40 runs batted in, and added 15 stolen bases, over just 66 at-bats as a high school senior while making the transition from shortstop to learning how to play behind the plate.
He had committed to play baseball at the University of Arkansas before signing.
