How much on average are the units going for? I have always thought that would be a good way to make some extra cash and I was thinking that before the TV show.

I've wanted to buy one since 1994ish when I moved out of town and "forgot" about mine and it went to auction. Thinking not much was in there until I realized it had my old yearbooks, Star Wars figures and a vintage Vespa body. Finally started going about a year back and I'm hooked. But it's alot of work. Maybe make .10 an hour. lol. I sell on Craigslist, ebay, ebay classifieds, have quarterly yard sales and have 2 spots in a local Antique shop. Have a DBA and Resell license (so I dont have to pay sales tax) and typically pay about $75 for a small unit - $400+ for a full unit. That's with nothing "major" showing. Toss a tool chest in there or a few small safes and that goes to $800+. Add in your dump fees and gas. Luckily it's a perfect fit for me as the monthly auction is 3 min from my work/home and I can use my works dumpsters, trucks etc. Above prices are for an area that's mostly older and Ag and the auctions are on a weekday. When I go to one across town in the "good" part and on a Sat. forget about it...everyone with a welfare check and cable is there looking to get rich. I go thru everything and repurpose alot of the furniture. Usually bring in about 2-4x net of what I pay. But like I said before it's alot of man hours. Keeps the wife and I very busy. As if my full time job and boys were not enough.. But it's fun like Christmas every month and we find alot of items for the house we never would have bought. Plus I find odd things that are unique. Like a wolf head on a Indian stick w/beads or more recently a whale vertabrae. Spend what you are okay with losing and happy hunting.

Sorry to hijack...

Thanks for the info. Like I said I have always been curious about them. You weren't hijacking, it is my thread and I asked a question. Thanks.

lol, I didn't catch that. No problem on the info. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions. I'm by no means a pro (bought 14 so far) but I think I'm off to a good start.

Few other bits of info-

units with boxes and containers that are low end looking, expect about 70% to be trash.

free auction listing site Storage Auctions

Dusty units- Look for footprints on boxes/floor etc. Previous tenants took the good stuff or a facility employee.

Staged units- Never seen this happen but I read about it. I get my buddy to rent a unit on a $1 move in special (or pay "normal" price). Pack unit with empty high end item boxes. Default. Goes to auction. Original unit owner gets $ as the facility only keeps what it owed and balance goes back to owner. My competition might have used his cash up for the day and unable to recoup, maybe his *** is a little less next time. Unsure if the "$ back to owner" rule applies to all states.
Talk about scary...

If a whole 5x10 or 20x20 of stuff is not for you, check around. Locally our Derrel's Mini Storage pulls out everything (good), and auctions big items seperately and lots the smaller items.

Since I have become a power seller, I don't get invited to the free listing parties anymore (missed out on the last three). Makes me sad as I have a bunch of things that I would like to list, but since 98% of them are low end, can't justify spending .30 to have something not sell.
