I have been slowly (very slowly) putting together the 2001 Greats of the Game Autograph set and I am hoping someone here has some more information on the Willie Stargell card. I know that redemption cards were inserted into packs for this card and that Stargell passed away before the cards could be signed, however he is still listed on all checklists I can find with the designation "NO AU." I found Fleer's press release (http://sportscardreport.com/news/blprfl080201.htm) regarding how they would fulfill the redemption, but as I have not been able to find any examples of this special card that was created to fulfill these I still have some questions. Has anyone seen or does anyone here own this replacement card? Were the original cards that were to be signed by Stargell backdoored into the marketplace? Is this set considered complete without the Stargell card?

I'm not delusional enough to think I will actually be able to complete this in the near future (a Mays sold for over $600 last week!) but this card has piqued my curiosity because I have seen nothing on eBay and every other search has resulted in a dead end.

Personally I would not consider the Stargell a part of the set.

Good luck with the ones you need.

I believe the card says autograph redemption on the base card basically. They weren't made and fleer did a tribute jersey card to fill the auto redemptions. I've seen a few as soon as they were released, but haven't seen on in a long time, not that I regularly look for them.

I believe the "no au" refers to the redemption card. I have a redemption card of Sam Jethoe that you can see below. I do have the Blair Double signed version and the newly discovered Richie Allen ROY.

Entire Set minus Mays

Agreed but if you feel you must include it then save the search on Ebay and maybe on will pop up.

I've seen the replacement card a couple of times, but that's been years ago. I would consider it complete with the redemption card and see the replacement game used as a bonus.

Tom, that is very impressive! It is good to know that with some time, patience and luck this can be done. I'm going to keep my eye out for a redemption card, but if one doesn't surface I'm not going to sweat it (too many short prints to sweat over a redemption card, right?).

If someone has a photo or scan of the replacement card that was produced I am still curious to see what that looks like.

Yes, I would love to see a scan too. There is also one very rare variation that is on my radar that I can't share until I lock in my copy :-) I've only seen it once and kick myself for not pulling the trigger

Maine of course......
I have the full set ;) including Mays. It was a long haul to pull it together.

I believe this is the card you are referencing..... ;)

Got this somewhere along the way, knowing that the auto did not exist.

...and good luck with this set. It's a doozy!

Haha, I understand completely. Once you've got yours I would love to know what it is though!
