I am always intrigued by what happens to players. Because 2006 was the first World Series trophy the Cardinals won in my lifetime, I decided to do a little research on where the players are today. A little research turned into me perusing Wikipedia, Baseball-Reference, and news articles to find out what happened to every player who appeared in a Cardinals game during the 2006 season. Here is what I discovered:

Yadier Molina - starting catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals; has won four Gold Gloves and been selected to three All-Star Games since 2006; member of 2011 World Series championship team with Cardinals

Albert Pujols - starting first baseman in first season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; has received two MVPs, one Gold Glove, and been selected to four All-Star Games; member of 2011 World Series championship team with Cardinals

Aaron Miles - signed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers; returned to the Cardinals for a one-year stint after playing for the Cubs in 2009; effective utility man for the Dodgers in 2011

David Eckstein - spent time with Toronto, Arizona, and San Diego before not being able to find a job; retired

Scott Rolen - on disabled list for Reds; one Gold Glove and two All-Star Games; current speculation about his career's future and Hall of Fame potential

So Taguchi - outfielder for the Orix Buffaloes in the Nippon Professional Baseball League; won a World Series with the Phillies in 2008 and played his last season in the MLB with the Cubs in 2009

Jim Edmonds - split time with the Padres, Cubs, Brewers, and Reds before retiring (after signing a minor-league deal with the Cardinals) in 2011; sat out for the 2009 season; currently owns Jim Edmonds 15 Steakhouse in St. Louis

Juan Encarnacion - suffered career-ending injury after being struck by foul ball from Aaron Miles while on deck in 2007; currently involved in politics in the Dominican Republic

Scott Spiezio - played half of a season for the Cardinals in 2007 before becoming involved in substance abuse and other legal issues; played organized baseball in the Golden Baseball League as recent as 2010

Chris Duncan - played three more seasons with the Cardinals dealing with complications from a herniated disk in his neck; had short minor league stints with the Red Sox and Nationals before retiring in 2011; currently a popular co-host of a St. Louis ESPN radio show

Hector Luna - on Phillies active roster; has played with Indians, Blue Jays, and Marlins at the major league level

John Rodriguez - outfielder for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League; never appeared in a Major League game after 2006

Ronnie Belliard - played in the MLB for the Nationals and Dogers; retired in June 2011 after brief stints in the minors with the Yankees and Phillies

Gary Bennett - played with the Cardinals in 2007 and the Dodgers in an injury-plagued 2008; named in Mitchell Report

Preston Wilson - appeared in 25 games for the Cardinals in 2007 before suffering a knee injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season; retired from MLB in 2009; made brief attempt at comeback after successful season with Long Island Ducks

Thanks for the read. Good research, surprising how many are already out of the MLB.

Thanks! It appears that only 11 players are on active rosters or the disabled list that would be on the Major League team.

Nice piece.Did not know Edmonds owned a steakhouse. After reading all those obscure names on that name it's still hard to believe they won it all that year.I need to dig out my '06 World Series DVD Collection again, good memories that year.

very interesting read. I might set aside some time and do the same with the '81 Dodgers, which was the first Dodger team to win in my lifetime. They had lost the previous 4 attempts ('66, '74, '77, '78)
