I think a lot of people have had difficulty understanding what's what and making sense of the incorrect checklists, colors, and serial numbers in this set. I'll never understand why it's so difficult to know what products you actually sold.

Regardless I'm specifically having problems with the Charcoal and Black versions, and the checklists/serial numbers aren't helping. My impression is that the Black is darker then the Charcoal- correct?

Here's what I've got versus what Beckett and Upper Deck show on their checklists.

BLACK
Mine- unnumbered
Beckett- unnumbered
Upper Deck- /250

CHARCOAL
Mine- /399
Beckett- /399
Upper Deck- unnumbered

JERSEY CHARCOAL
Mine- /125
Beckett- unnumbered
Upper Deck- unnumbered

I believe the leaves the Jersey Black as the ONLY version I'm missing. I've looked every single day for this card and it's never popped up on eBay. Beckett and UD actually agree on the serial #'s for these, but they're identical to what I think the Jersey Charcoal should be. Or does it even exist? (Beckett still lists the Jersey Red, so I have ZERO confidence in their checklist)

JERSEY BLACK
Mine- don't own
Beckett- /125
Upper Deck- /125

Top complicate this, I've seen EACH of these color variations advertised on eBay as Charcoal, Black, and Grey. Some are /125, some /200, and just for fun I've seen some are unnumbered.

So my questions are:

1) The Black is much darker than the Charcoal, right? (Is there a UD reference sheet?)
2) Is it possible it doesn't exist?
3) Assuming it exists, how can I find out if it's /125 or unnumbered? Or something else?
4) Do you think anyone at Upper Deck even knows?

Thanks a million for any input!

I THOUGHT the black was unnumbered and available only in retail, or perhaps that's the case with charcoal. I know, it's confusing, and I'm sorry for not being a ton of help.

it;s inconsistent. some of the darker gray parallels are called "black" and some are called "charcoal" by beckett (and vice versa with the lighter grey). I can't straighten it out until I get home from work and don't remember exactly offhand, but I do know that is the case.

Need scans of cards to compare. I'm familiar with the "one per pack" unnumbered insert, which I considered to be Charcoal, and not black, just by my own assumption of appearance, not based on anything official from UD.

Here are images of what I own. The first 2 are actually the same color- it's the top loader vs. the screw-down affecting the appearance. I'm assuming those are what Upper Deck considers Charcoal. Both are serial numbered. The 3rd card is Black, right?

Is there anyway to tell if there's actually a Jersey Black version for Vizquel? If so, how do I find out with certainty what it's numbered to?

I'm pretty sure the picture all the way on the right is the Charcoal one. Black looks more greyish, like the one on the left. The one on the far right is Charcoal, and is only found in retail

If you're right, that's the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time! Wouldn't 99.999% of people say that black is darker than charcoal? Nice job, UD.

Can anyone else confirm this? And is there anyone I can contact at UD with these images to verify? Wow am I hugely frustrated.

Charcoal version, retail only, bought when they first came out and stated as such:

Black version, hobby version. Does the naming convention make sense? No, but these are the names UD chose:

OK guys, thanks a lot for helping me out with this! Ugh, I need to fix my checklist.

My last question is how rare are the Jersey Charcoal cards? I've never seen the Vizquel on eBay despite looking literally every day since they were released.

The retail boxes had 24 packs and the odds for a memorabilia/auto card is 1 in 24. So depending on how many charcoal memorabilia/auto cards there, I would say the odds for a specific player might be rather high. Factor in how much less retail is busted, finding your player is going to be tough.

Another recent tough retail find was the 2007 Upper Deck Cooperstown Calling set. Took me a while to find the Andruw and I have only seen 5 total since the release. Retail inserts can be tough. Good luck finding it!
