2008 UD Yankees and Red Sox "fan packs"

Got 2008 Upper Deck Yankees and Red Sox fan packs in one of those random pack boxes at Target. Each has like 25 cards from various 2007 and 2008 UD products and the unusual part is the 2007 UD Masterpieces cards from each pack are smooth and glossy versus the matte finish. Got most of the stars, so if anyone needs this version for their PC's, send me a PM and your address...

I just got a few of these in some of the repacks i purchased. Definitely some uncatalogued variations available in these packs. The 2007 Upper Deck base cards look the same as the regular 2007 cards except they are noticeably thinner (about 2/3 the thickness of the standard 2007 Upper Deck card). The 2007 UD MLB Artifacts cards have a different tint to the borders and are also much thinner. The 2007 UD Future Stars use silver foil on the fronts (and are thinner). The 2007 SP Legendary Cuts cards use silver foil on the fronts instead of gold foil (also much thinner card stock). As mentioned above, the 2007 UD Masterpieces are printed on thin flat glossy stock and use silver foil instead of gold foil on the fronts. Finally, the 2008 Upper Deck cards look the same on the fronts and backs but use thinner card stock than regular 2008 Upper Deck.

So far, here are the checklists that I've managed to put together for this issue (probably incomplete since it seems like there are about 15 cards that are in just about every 25 card pack and then 10 that are different from pack to pack.

I remember seeing the Sox packs all the time when I started collecting again, never thought to grab any. Once I found the Masterpieces variation, I went hunting and now they're nowhere to be found (none in any of those Target repacks I've gotten). I always assumed the other cards were all the same base UD, but if you're finding distinct differences, then I'm really gonna kick myself.

I ended up grabbing a few of these, and although I can see the differences in the other sets, the 07 and 08 UD base looks identical to these Fan Pack cards. I didn't see any difference in thickness, foil, or color (which I'm thankful for, means fewer oddballs to track down).

i know this in an old thread , but since i got another fan pack tonight i figured this would be as good a time as any to bump this up and add more info....

baseballcardpedia has some decent info and a partial checklist , but only mentions 3 teams - the red sox , yankees , and indians ....they have ongoing checklists for boston and new york , but no info for cleveland....

the info there details the differences between the original cards and the fan pack versions for each product and acknowledges that help would be appreciated in building the checklist of known teams and adding in other teams not already listed....

In 2008, Upper Deck distributed "Fan Packs" that contained cards from specific teams; Red Sox, Indians and Yankees. These packs contains lower-quality versions of a variety of 2007 ans 2008 Upper Deck base cards including 2007 UD Series 1 and 2, 2008 UD Series 1, 2007 UD Masterpeices, 2007 UD MLB Artifacts, 2007 Future Stars and 2007 SP Legendary Cuts. The differences are listed below:


2007 SP Legendary Cuts: foil on front is silver instead of gold
2007 UD Masterpeices: glossy, finish on front (no texture)
2007 Future Stars: Darker green background and silver foil
2008 UD: thinner card stock

well , the pack i got last year was the red sox version and all but one or two of the cards i pulled were already posted on the checklist , BUT the pack i got today is of the mariners......at some point in the next few hours (or maybe tomorrow) i'll provide the breakdown on my pack here and see if i can pass the same info on at the other site...

These variations are news to me as a Doerr collector but solve a lot of mysterious checklist issues for me, especially UD Masterpiece Glossy. Would definitely be interested in any more info on these that come about. Feel like these wouldn't be listed correctly as variations on eBay or other sites.
