That is pretty interesting.

I too was skeptical of how these cards would be received. I guess at this point I'm less surprised that Exquisite has sold well and went up in value a bit (since it is so expensive, limited and has the name recognition) and more surprised that some of the Panini products have sold so poorly in relation.

At this point Panini has released RC's with on-card auto's. RC's with limited print runs, RC's with nice patches, etc. yet still none seem to sell near those Exquisite's. That doesn't bode well for Panini, or (at least to me) inspire me to want to buy any $100+ boxes. It almost seems the same as the way Topps was viewed the past few years in relation to UD......which is kind of sad for Panini since they have the exclusive license. Maybe it'll take National Treasures to produce rc's that sell at high-end prices........or I could just totally be off base with that assessment.

None of the Panini products have really distinguished itself from the others, ie, no one particular brand or rookie card has "Stood out" as THE card to get. The remaining high end issues are VERY important for Panini from now on- are they going to just churn out the same designs over and over again, and just charge a higher price for national treasures/timeless treasures/prime cuts, or are they going to step it up and enthall us with a impossible to ignore design that will grab us by the necks and say,"this is the best card in existence of this rookie, buy and invest in me".

I'm kind of thinking Panini just won't be able to pull it out, and this year's exquisite will continue to stand up through time, even if some of the major rookies aren't autographed.

Panini has so far catered to the blue collar worker, that's seems like the direction the NBA wants Panini to take. And until they realize they need to put out a primo product, their cards will just flounder in terms of value in the eyes of discriminating collectors.

I think this was the final UD Exquisite Basketball Set. (See 9/21/09 Press Release Below)

And based on how they got their hand slapped by the MLB, they probably won't be playing around any more.

I know, I just refuse to accept it. LOL

One hopes that with the success of this year's RC's & their Jordan & Tiger exclusives, they'll still manage to put out something that resembles a high end basketball product. I can dream anyway. I just cannot get behind the panini exclusive. I can't put my finger on it, but the cards just look off. As of right now, I have ZERO interest in any of their basketball products, but maybe that'll change. I guess I'll have to stick to buying previous releases until the exclusive is up in four years. :?

So no more good high end product in baseball and no more good high end products in basketball? I never purchased boxes, but as a singles buyer and player collector the lack of UD in my two favorite sports to collect is terrible news.

I'm doubtful this will be the end as well considering they pieced together Ultimate Collection Basketball, UD has plans for 2010/11 NBA Product....so it wouldn't surprise me if they decide to give it a go.

If they had Jordan, Tiger, possibly LeBron, why not mix in Pete Rose, Greg Maddux and other under contract somehow, and it seems like collectors don't mind "Base" Exquisite Rookies in College Unis ... so I think it could work and collectors would buy into it.

With the relative popularity of recent 'premium' sets like Creative Cardboard and Razor offerings, a limited...possibly even higher end price for Exquisite Basketball might be what collectors want. Considering the Panini Products have been in the Sub $150 price range, it might have a place in the market. I'm sure UD has thought it over.

That was pretty much the same thing I was thinking - I mentioned it in another thread.
As long as they have the ability to produce high-end Jordan and Lebron auto's they mine as well make Exquisite, because those were the big hits people were chasing. The fact the rc's have maintained value is a bonus.

Like you, I figure if they do attempt another release I expect there to be legends from other sports - from the sales I saw of those flashback rc's, that is another thins that bodes well. And maybe they can release it at a slightly lower price point to offset some of the content they'll be unable to include.

If that doesn't occur - then I'd put money on them re-branding and creating an Exquisite like multi-sport legends product.

Ok let's assume for a moment that this most recent release is the end of Exquisite basketball as we know. What happens to the value of previous Exquisite releases? Do the cards, especially the RC's, become worth more or less? I'd have to think more.
