i would not even put sterling in the debate unless we are talking the /50 autos
personally i think sterling is a second rate, sticker auto, overpriced overproduced product and sales on the secondary market agree.if the choice is first year non auto or second year sterling auto make mine first year non sterling non auto everytime
Agreed. Regardless, if there is growth potential in one, there is growth potential in both...it's just the percentage of growth that is the discussion. And, I have been a firm believer that the lower the entry price point, the higher the growth percentage potential.

yes the lower price point adds to the scarcity of the good cards every other sterling break i saw had a longo auto in it the price on the box had to be justified some how. i wasnt around for 06 draft but if i can comepare a 45-65 dollar box of chrome to sterling. the hits are harder to come by and thus there is more want for them

45 / box is below cost. When 06 came out the cheapest you could get it in any quantity was ~58.00. With the hype on the set, cases were preselling at 625 and hit 700 before release.

For example, your growth potential in 50 base Bowman Chromes is typically greater than the growth potential in a Gold Refractor.

point taken as i have noticed a beckett price spike in my low end longoria and the pricier stuff stays consistent
i know beckett is not true pricing but it does provide a market trend even though it is behind
that said are you saying a better investment would be 50 longo 08 chrome
rc's verses his gold auto refracter from draft?
Personally, I have never thought of Gold Refractors as good investments, but like everything, it all comes down to price point and how you can move them.

I'll say this, if you were to purchase a 2006 Longoria Chrome autograph gold refractor, and then take the same amount of money and throw it into 2008 chrome "MLB rookies" and Longoria continues playing great and let's say win the MVP...I think you'll potentially make a lot more money reselling the 2008 base "rc" singles than the gold refractor.

Of course the gold refractor is more "desirable" and autographed, but the average consumer/collector won't be able to afford the card, let alone if it doubles in price. The base singles will be an extremely inexpensive entry point (maybe a $2/each) and those cards will easily be selling in the $5-7 range.

So again, for me, the best investment is always in bulk.

Granted on-card autos would improve the Bowman Sterling product tremendously, but rest-assured there is nothing "overproduced" about Sterling; Our allocations on Sterling are scant compared to reg Bowman Chrome & Draft. 2008 Sterling is all but dried up, and boxes on the market are actually higher than SRP. I don't expect to see stickers on the 09 Sterling at all. I also find the Sterling to be far more attractive than the cheaper brands imho.

In the battle of 2nd year autos vs 1st year non-autos, the autos win every time.

Pretty bad checklist on the surface, especially since most, if not all, of these guys have autographs in 2008....regardless of licensing,

I disagree. I think a licensed 09 card would take precedence over n unlicensed 08 card in the long run.

Really? So the fact that a mainstream and popular card was on the market a full year ahead of the first chrome card has no bearing on the prices?

interesting my thought has always been that there are so many that you would want to have the rarer hard to get versions.
i post elsewhere also and whenever i post a pic of my heritage longo rc /59 the response is overwhelming. if i were to post my longo 08 chrome rc no one would care

Yes, historically, licensed cards did take precedence during the pre-Bowman Chrome years when licensing existed or was available.

But historically these cards essentially were what are now called MLB *and* MLBPA licensed cards - simply put, these were cards of guys already on MLB rosters.

Its just so much easier to think of the player's professional status at the time of the card's release and avoid unnecessary drama and individual agendas regarding licensing.

Jon, Razor was neither "mainstream" or "popular" in the general collecting public. To many, it's just an autographed minor league card at this point. If Razor truly becomes a "player" in this hobby, we'll definitely see some growth in interest, but at this point, they aren't there yet.

Not a slam, but just because they seemed "mainstream" and "popular" here on FCB, doesn't mean that the rest of the hobby feels the same way.

That is the logical thought, but take it a step further, is the average collector going to drop $100 for a card or $5-10?

Just because the expensive cards are more glamorous, it doesn't mean they are more profitable.

Very good point, lots more guys willing to drop 25-30 dollars on a base. The more expensive a card becomes, the smaller the audience...

true im not in the business of flipping cards. your insight is valued. i buy boxes pull the common crap and then buy or trade my way into the better cards. so for me there really isnt an issue of should i hoard this card or that one
yes there is more profit to be made selling 50 hotdogs then one fillet Mignon
it depends on what your goals are i guess for me the heritage /59 rc will sell 10 years from now just as easy as the common rc and i am happy to have the variety that my method offers plus there is the possibility that my card /59 will be a must have for someone at any price

Mainstream & popular? Razor doesn't fall into either of these categories. Even if it did, I'd still back up my comment.

Was Razor the only company that had any of these player's autos last year, or did EEE, Contenders and/or Threads?

It's interesting to see people flipping from wanting the FY non auto a year ago to wanting the second year auto now.

Looking again, I don't even see Porcello on the checklist. I hope I just missed him or they at least plan to include him and aren't just using him all over the sell sheet without having a card of him in the product.

Re: Info about 2009 Bowman Chrome is live

I'm switching to scarcity over quantity. I've got 20 psa 10's of a base chrome prospect, for convenience sake if I need to sell them all in a short period of time I'd rather have 2 gold refractors[or whatever conversion you want to use etc].
