I would not be shocked if Henderson, Rice, Blyleven and Dawson made it in today.

Frankly...I think Henderson is the only "lock."

100% agree with you along with just about all the pundits. With this being Rice's last year and with his % from last year, I'll be surprised if he does not make it now. He is borderline either way, along with many who are in (Cepeda, Perez, Bunning, ) and many who are out (Gil Hodges, Santo, Jack Morris etc..)

Agreed.

For me, the problem with this discussion every year is the comparison with players who are currently in. Sure, there are some questionable HOF members, but it does not mean that we should perpetuate the inclusion of similarly "questionable" players.

I predict Tim Raines will not get the respect that he deserves. Especially given that he and Henderson are such a natural comparison.

I'm done with the borderline HOFer debate. I don't need a bunch of self-important reporters to tell me which palyers are HOF-worthy. I know who they are, no matter what some building in Cooperstown has to say about it.

It's true we hear a lot of the same arguments and complaints every year about who didn't get in, who is already in and shouldn't be, and so on. The voting system is still the biggest problem, and keeps guys out who should have been in long ago. (Rice, Blyleven, Dawson, Morris). It also puts players on the ballot who have no business being there. Someone will have 2-3 votes all because some idiot writer didn't want to vote for Rice because he snubbed him in 1978.

I know this topic is beaten to death every year in various capacities, but are Rice & Dawson any better statistically this year than they were last year or 5 years ago?

That right there is the reason why I believe there should be some sort of standard accumen that the BB writers should have to pass every year in order to retain their vote. If you are a consistent *******/homer/beat writer your vote should be taken away, period.

I realize there are caveats to this concerning players from the steroid era, but 99% of the players from the 80's have not gotten any better or worse in the last 5-15 years that they haven't been playing. If Rice gets in this year, why didn't he get in 10 years ago?

Let's go Dale!!!!!!

In all seriousness, I've never really understood this. The year-after-year voting to determine if you're in this year as opposed to last just doesn't make sense. If guys like Rice, Dawson, Blyleven, Murphy, etc. are HOFers, then they are HOFers. What makes any of these guys more worthy this year as opposed to any past year? I know there's a stigma attached to the "first ballot" guys, but honestly would their worthiness be deemed any less significant if they were enshrined with other worthy people? I never understood this.

Here's a great article on McGwire and the steroids era as a whole. Hopefully McGwire will get more than 129 votes this time around (128 +Edes).

"So, who among us feels confident they can parse the clean from the dirty? Who can determine that one player’s accomplishments were the result of old-fashioned skill, hard work and toughness, and another’s the product of the right laboratory?"

Let McGwire in. Who know's which other players (and HOFers/possible HOFers) might have "cheated" at times?

While agree that Tim Raines should be discussed when talking about Rickey Henderson, they are not the same player and do not have the same credentials and stats.

In regards to McGwire, steroids and the Hall of Fame...to assume that there is not a current member of the HOF that took steroids at least once is to be incredibly naive.

That being said, McGwire is the first of the "Steroids Era" to step up to the gallows and frankly, it's going to take a 5-tool player and fellow member of the "Steroids Era" to get in before he does. McGwire has debatable stats to garner enshrinement, so when his stats are debatable, throwing in steroids and he'll sit outside for now.

It's pretty sad that Tim Raines doesn't get more consideration.

Lifetime .294 avg...2600+ hits...800+ SBs, and I believe top 2 or 3 lifetime in SB success rate (84%). Oh, he had 4 NL SB titles, led leage in Runs twice, and finished second twice...7 all-star game appearances.

There are a number of players currently in the HOF who would love to have numbers like his.

He was the second-best leadoff hitter of all-time behind Rickey Henderson. Now, I'm not saying he should be a first-ballot HOFer, but he should be at least considered if we're talking about Jim Rice.

I just think Pedro Gomez should never be able to vote b/c he is saying he would/will (don't know if he has the privilege yet) vote for Jay Bell.
