I do not purchase many modern products, but I do enjoy each year's release of National Treasures. I often find reasonable prices for the cards I want following the product's release, but this year I feel as if I have been paying dramatically less for the cards I want.
When considering a box (7 hits) can sell online for $360 and in a hobby shop for $400, I was expecting to pay a higher premium for singles. Up until this point I was planning to purchase a box, but these results have me second guessing the decision. I assume Sanchez, Stafford, et. al. are selling well, but to me NT has never been about rookies.

Here are a few examples of under-performing pieces I have acquired in the past several days:

2009 Playoff National Treasures Century Material Signature Prime #185 Alex Karras/10 [ebay:ilz38r8p]110497344292[/ebay:ilz38r8p] $34.55
2009 Playoff National Treasures Champions Materials Trios #5 Jim Parker/Raymond Berry/Lenny Moore [ebay:ilz38r8p]120533101701[/ebay:ilz38r8p] $4.52
2009 Playoff National Treasures Champions Signatures #2 Charley Trippi/50 [ebay:ilz38r8p]220558427823[/ebay:ilz38r8p] $7
2009 Playoff National Treasures Timeline Materials Signature Custom Team Nicknames #5 Jim Brown/25 [ebay:ilz38r8p]190373696100[/ebay:ilz38r8p] $59.99

Are any of you having similar experiences with this year's product?

I would say that those cards sold for about the going rate. Jim Brown, Karras, etc. those guys all have autos in abundance, unless I'm missing something. Like J-Rod said, I think a lot of people are after the rookies. If you're into rookies, especially Sanchez, etc. there are some very nice patch cards to be had. However, with this product - like any of the high end ones, high risk = high reward.

Problem is that all the Donruss / Panini products look alike. No variations what-so-ever.

Those are less desired players:

If look at similar cards but better players they sell for a lot more:

Jerry Rice like your Jim Brown

Packers Triple Jersey

Leroy Kelly even sold pretty well

Ronnie Lott champions

Face it, Jim Brown signs a ton. His auto's all go for that now unless its something unique. Also just because its a high end product doesn't mean it turns mediocre sellers into great sellers. This goes for anything from EXQ, SPA, Limited, TTT etc.

I was hoping they would continue with the brand logo and laundry tag inserts, but I don't think I've seen any yet of HOF players. I really like the look of those cards from the 07 and 08 sets. The 06 and 07 sets also had some great jumbo patches of retired players, but it looks like this year they decided to go with tiny swatches and multiple players on a card.
