2010 "1990" ud stamped anniversary buy backs?

Received my Robin Ventura promptly.

I have to say that I am undewhelmed by the card, especially vs. price paid. More so after seeing the two Ryan's and Griffey close on ebay recently.

My copy was an 8, if anything, which was a major let-down for me, considering how clean 1990 UD cards usually are out of the packaging, especially factory sets and how nice everyone else's looked.

I should've known better than to give any credence to the Aqueous comparison as with errors and variations, if it's unlisted and has little known info within the greater collecting community, it will almost always sell for far less, even than a much more abundant, cataloged error/variation. Had Expo pushed to get these listed in Beckett/SCD, these could potentially pull triple digits on a few players. I probably should've just gone for it at auction.

I'm curious which of you non-McGwire guys nailed down the McGwire checklist though before I could get to it!

Well for many years Aqueous cards sold for dirt cheap as people didn't think they were real or worth anything. I picked up two Pirates for 5 bucks total just 2 years ago (Drabek and Smiley I believe).

In 5 years will they be worth more than today is what you have to ask yourself and if you can ever find them again.

When was this? Beyond commons, semis, I've never seen stars sell low since I began tracking them in 2002. The worst I've seen for commons are those bundled in Chandy's 9ct. lots of them and they usually sold at $30 appx. $5 has been a pretty steady rate for guys like Smiley, Drabek, etc. These have been sought after and "worth something" pretty much since their cataloging.

I am at fault for being unsatisfied witht he purchase price because:

A.) The Aqueous logic is completely flawed. They were produced that year (1990) and are an established, cataloged, test issue. These are common, base set cards machine stamped 20 years after for a promotion that never happened. These, especially if the guy has 3, 4, 5 whatever many sets, are more akin to 2003 Topps Fan Favorites Vintage Buy Backs. Many of which were produced in extremely low quantities.

B.) I thought I'd get a card that looked like what you guys all received. Istead, I get what looks like a PSA 8 at best, not a card fresh from a factory set. Plus, I love the 1990 UD set, this was, like you all feel, a cool thing to pick-up. It's just in retrospect, I don't feel it was worth paying over what I did for either of my Aqueous Venturas, and I am fairly certain had I taken the seller's threat of them being listed on eBay, I'd have owned it for a much more reasonable price.
Again, my mistake.

And by the way, for those happy with the turn-out, good for you! This is not meant to challenge that. I just figured I'd share my experience and thoughts on the cards.

I saw a Ripken Aqueous sell for $75 quite a few years ago... passed on it as I didn't know enough about the issue at the time

In our bargaining, he pointed out the fact that I'd be bypassing them hitting eBay this way. Which makes sense and it added to my decision to pay more than I felt it was worth.

That said, I'd like to add that Expo has sent me a partial refund, which is beyond generous (not to mention, not the point of this post) and very appreciated.

For everyone's sake, I hope he (or someone) is able to get these recognized by the big books.

Lesson learned on my part. I'll start sending out some shots of the actual card prior to completion of any agreement.
