I don't normally buy retail, because 90% of it is junk. That being said I was at Toys R Us the other day doing some last minute Christmas shopping and saw the new 2010 Bowman Platinum Baseball. They have 20 or so rack packs that have 3 retail packs plus a 4th pack that has 3 Purple Refractors for $10.
I saw that 2 of the rack packs had a pack in each that was way thicker than any other, so I thought I would take a chance on them. Sure enough it was worth my $20 investment. Here is what I pulled:

Jason Heyward RC
Mike Stanton RC
Jesus Montero Pros
Ubaldo Jimenez Par /999
Jose Iglesias Purple Ref
Mike Trout Purple Ref
4 USA Purple Ref
Aroldis Chapman Green Refractor 306/499
Keyvius Sampson Ref Auto
Brett Cecil Ref Jersey-Auto 685/740
Gerrit Cole Ref USA Jersey-Auto 539/740 (Projected Overall #1 Pick in 2011 Draft)

The Jersey-Auto pack odds were 1 in 200 and the regular auto's were 1 in 26.

I listed the 3 autos along with the Chapman and Trout on Ebay in case you cared.

This would have been a good full box of hobby let alone 2 rack packs of retail. Best I have ever done with retail, but wasn't hard to do with my past luck.

Let me know what you think.

I'll point out that you pack-searched, and this time you even admitted it. But watch, people will come down on me as usual for pointing out when people pack-search.

I hear what you are saying, but I didn't feel them, I just noticed that the packs were twice as thick. I wasn't 100% sure there were jersey auto's in them, but thought my chances were better than buying the other packs. Topps should put decoys in a few of the packs. Even the packs with the parallels numbered /999 are not as thick as the ones with jersey-autos. It's like the celo packs where you can see the front and back cards. If you see a Kevin Durant Santa Hat Rookie card on the back, then you buy the pack for $3! Which I did that too! I don't think you should feel the packs up and down, but if you can tell what is inside by just looking at it, the fair game and shame on the card company.

ya'll need to get off that dude....he simply looked at the packs, and bought the thick ones....I honestly don't see a problem with it....if you are in the store and see a melon with mold on it, would you buy it? no, you would buy one that looked good. I'm really not trying to change your mind, just trying to offer my perspective on the subject

Sure he can. The odds on any other kid getting anything good now is Zero. So he killed the odds for everyone else. :D

Well, you just killed the odds of someone getting a mellon without mold on it if you picked up the only one that didn't have mold on it!

SHAME ON YOU YOU ODDS WRECKER!

Well, at least he was honest to say that he looked for the two thickest ones and bought them. He could have easily cut out that part...

My LCS has a rule that if you touch the pack, you bought the pack. So basically you just reach in and pick the pack you want and pay. No looking at it, feeling it's thickness etc. or whatever that TRU/target etc. let people like the OP do.

the dude didnt feel the packs therefore he didnt pack search, he did whqat everyone else would have done, even though most of us wouldnt admit it. he saw two packs were thicker so bought those. would yall be saying he pack searched if he said all of that then said that the packs had decoys in them... probably not. someone was going to buy the packs why not him...

I do not see how he can be accused of pack searching, when all he did was picked the largest packs. Nice break

I have never been able to tell so easy before, so it's not like I have done this before. It was just so obvious it seemed to be good to be true, but it was true. I guess this makes up for the hundreds of dollars I have spent on retail to get mostly junk.
Retail does seem to be better than in years past, but still far from hobby.

I would be shocked if Gerrit Cole is drafted over Rendon next year.

Hey, I just went to walmart and they put out a 12 box case of OREOs. I saw a box that was longer than the others and had 20% more OREOs, but it didn't say so on the box. I searched through the rest of the boxes and found another one. I bought those two boxes for the smae price as two regular boxes.

Am I an evil OREO searcher or am I an informed buyer?

People come down on you becasue you only post when it's to troll...

That being said, I 50% agree with you. He did know he was getting a better chance by taking the thick packs. He didn't sit there groping them with his ass-crack hanging out and using a scale in the store. I'm ambivalent about it, becasue i would hope my kids would gravitate to the thicker packs too; seems kind of obvious. You might get decoys, you might get goods...

I felt all the packs of Heritage until I found a thick, stiff one and bought that one. Then I did the same with the Prestige football. Then the Gridiron Gear. Then I went to all the other Targets, Meijers and Wal-Marts in my area. Sure enough, they were all jerseys. I win. But it wasn't pack-searching, right?

I don't have a problem with pack-searching at all. I have a problem with people who pack-search and pretend that they don't. And I have a problem with boards calling one person a pack-searcher while defending another who does the same thing because of popularity (not saying that this is the case in this instance).

If you want to pack-search, go do it. You should profit from your knowledge like the OP in this thread did. If someone else wants that stuff, they need to get to the store before you do. But don't come on here and pretend that you sat on a horseshoe.
