Does anyone have an idea why this card is consistently doing $40-$55 on ebay all of a sudden?

Guess it must really be rare.

Probably because it was featured as an 'error' on yahoo.com. The HK (Harry Kalas) patch was not airbrushed from the photo

Why would it be? Is there some policy about patches like that?

I know this sounds crazy, but I just looked at the first auction you posted and was able to get the answer.

You are bidding on a TOPPS ERROR card of Cliff Lee. The Topps company, in their desire to get a card out quickly, took a picture of Cliff Lee in his Phillies uniform and superimposed a Mariners uniform. The problem is that they left the black HK patch (in memory of Harry Kalas, the late Phillies broadcaster) on the uniform. Who knows how this was missed, but what a big miss. Grab a collectors item now.

How hard would it have been to just read the auction?

That's a patch on the Phillies' uniform. He's pictured in an airbrushed M's uni

Ah, duh. I saw the border colors but didn't look at the actual uni. Uncorrected I assume, sell immediately. There are a bunch available for 25 cents on beckett, probably not worth it even to order them. Might be worth a trip to the card shop over lunch, though.

This is one of THE dumbest things I've ever seen. I am normally not one to criticize what people buy or what
they choose to pay for it, but there are 10s of 1,000s of these printed. This is laughable.

The whole lot came to 99 cents and included 10 cards - I'm not sure why this auction is facepalm-worthy :?: Is it because others paid a bunch for it before?
