2011 Topps Series 1 Checklist Oddity

While patiently waiting for the delivery of my Series 1 Jumbo case I have been eyeballing the tentative checklist to see what I can expect to pull (as well as what I cannot expect, but hope to pull). When I got to the Topps 60 Autographs something struck me as being out of place on a non-cut autograph checklist. In between Andrew McCutchen and Marlon Byrd was this:

"T60A-MF Mark Fidrych"

The same Mark Fidrych who passed away in 2009.

My first thought was that this was a misprint, but I did some research and found that he did have sticker autographs in a Topps product as recently as 2008 Cosigners so it is possible Topps has a stash of these leftover. It still seems a little odd though considering every other subject in this particular set is, well...alive. Has Topps previously issued new, non-cut autographed cards of subjects that have been deceased for this long?

What do you all think? Is this a mistake and the card will not be produced? Does Topps have stickers leftover? Or is it a much more chilling possibility...Topps' first ever certified zombie autograph?

Yes, it's a zombie autograph.

Obviously, the simplest answer is likely the most correct one. They have a stash of extra autos.

I would think left-over stickers, a cut auto, or maybe Topps has been planning their 60th for awhile now and might have gotten Fidrych on card before his death.

I believe Topps produced quite a few autos of Johnny Podres and George Kell after they passed, but they were all stickers.

Kell signed enough stickers until 2051 Topps.

Yep, I saw some of these as well. Podres had sticker autos in Triple Threads 2 years after his death. I met him at a Phillies camp when I was 10 and I snapped some up.

I believe you are correct sir. I looked through my Dodger autographs and found a 2008 Podres which I am assuming was produced after he passed in January of that year. You have been thanked.

Rest easy everyone. The zombie apocalypse is not as imminent as we have been led to believe.

I suppose this also means that there is a small silver-lining in the sticker autograph cloud (for those that might otherwise not care for them). As long as there are stickers there can continue to be new autograph cards of your favorite stars for years to come.
